Total Time = 1h 19m 41s
Overall Rank = 52/166
Age Group = M 30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/15
Pre-race routine:

Got to the race site, set up transition area, then hit the bathroom.
Event warmup:

Ran 1 mile out and back with Nate and Tony.
Swim
  • 04m 49s
  • 250 meters
  • 01m 56s / 100 meters
Comments:

I wish I could've gone a little harder, but I was pretty sandwiched. Still not a fast swimmer, but there also wasn't much advantage to going too hard in this race. The swim just wasn't going to add up to much of a time difference.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

I was surprised to come out of the pool and find it raining.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Bike
  • 48m 51s
  • 16.5 miles
  • 20.29 mile/hr
Comments:

I really wanted a 20 mph, and I hit it, so I'm thrilled with my performance. I focused and went hard; this was definitely my best bike performance in a race so far.
What would you do differently?:

As always, I probably could've gone harder, but it's hard to know how much to hold back since that run is always looming.
Transition 2
  • 01m 3s
Comments:

I lost time here compared to everyone else, and it has to be the fact that I'm probably the only one putting on socks. I have to start practicing not wearing them on shorter runs.
What would you do differently?:

During the race, nothing, but I'll start doing a little training without socks. I just REALLY don't want blisters.
Run
  • 23m 49s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I just tried to push hard and accept that it was going to hurt. I'm happy with my time, and the fact that I had plenty left in the tank after the race. My performance on this course is so much better than last year, pretty thrilled.
What would you do differently?:

not much
Post race
Warm down:

I got some ART, and ate some pizza and fruit.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much, but if it's anything, it's me still figuring out how hard I can go and still have enough to finish the race.

Event comments:

This is a great race. The course is really nice, and the venue is great. There weren't a ton of volunteers today, but I understood because the weather so pretty crummy. It didn't affect my race at all.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
