Sunny
Total Time = 1h 43m 11s
Overall Rank = 12/34
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 3/6
Event warmup:

Nothing really. They don't let you in the water past your ankles before the race.
Swim
  • 16m 54s
  • 586 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

So I decided to try to go out hard and stay there for a short swim. I took off like a shot for the bouy straight ahead. Wrong direction.... I left the "counter" out of counterclockwise. At first I thought I was just on the wide left. Then realized everyone else had headed to the right. According to Garmin i added 200yds to this swim. And that was the only fast swimming that i did, in the wrong direction. I haven't been swimming so I don't know what made me think I could keep a hard pace. The only good news was I had no contact until I got back on track and got tangled up with a back stoker. At least i was able to surge and break away or my ego would have been totally crushed. Even the extra 200 yards doesn't justify almost 5 min from last year.
What would you do differently?:

Everything. What a fiasco...
Transition 1
  • 01m 20s
What would you do differently?:

I don't know what I did to lose time this year, except maybe where I racked. Everything went
Smooth enough.
Bike
  • 58m 42s
  • 18 miles
  • 18.40 mile/hr
Comments:

I worked this pretty hard and passed a good number of folks. Nearing the entrance there was a guy I should have passed before getting to the "no pass" zone. I understand being safe, but we crawled in for the finish. I'm not sure how I lost 3 minutes. It couldn't all have been from the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I should have passed that last guy, and I should train more. Also, pay more attention to pre-race prep. I realized I was using my trainer skewer. If I'm not going to give a shit about wasted weight, maybe I should stop spending $50 for a light carbon bottle cage.
Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Run
  • 25m 23s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 07m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Just tried to keep pushing and picking people off. Let it go on the final downhills
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, maybe push a little harder in the 1st 1.5 Miles. Its a pretty tough 3.5 Mile run, so mostly happy.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. I was hurting at the end of the run.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swimming the wrong way, inconsistent training.

Event comments:

I like this race, but its on a popular day locally. It was my first tri in 2011, so this makes a threepeat. Comparison to last year:

Swim 16:54 vs 12:26 (+4:28)
T1 1:20 vs 0:56 (+0:24)
Bike 58:42 vs 55:25 (+3:17)
T2 0:49 vs 0:50 (-0:01)
Run 25:23 vs 26:01 (-0:38)

Course: Short, steep climb, then 2 loops of rollers. I like this course for keeping power up. The downhills aren't long or technical, except for the last 1/4 mile, which is a 10 mph no-pass zone. It seemed like they chip-sealed the road this spring. So no potholes but a lot of loose gravel.

The crux of rehab was so simple: “Eat and exercise like your life depended on it.” It seemed to take all the guesswork out of the picture and make things that much easier for me.

There are tons of great diets out there for people who eat meat, but I can’t find anything for vegetarians. I also find that when I eat healthy, I am hungry all the time.

If a training program increases in intensity too quickly, or does not include enough time for recovery, injury can result.
