Pre-race routine:

Drove up from Richmond before race; protein/yogurt shake in car, diet Dew, 1/2 uncrustable before hitting town.
Event warmup:

Check-in, got everything set, took the bike out for a quick spin to make sure that being shoved in car hadn't messed gears, went out for a little swim to see if it was really as choppy, wavy, and currenty as it looked from shore. Yep. It was.
Swim
  • 1h 17m 27s
  • 1500 meters
  • 05m 10s / 100 meters
Comments:

Hardest thing I've ever done. Wavy. Currenty. High tide. Even the best swimmers commented on how the swim was hard and a friend of Matt's said that he usually shoots for 28minutes and swam it in 40. So I guess it wasn't just me...but still, this was the worst thing ever. Thank goodness for my paddle board new BFF, Hannah, who hung with me and talked me down from my freak out.
What would you do differently?:

Not. Freak. Out.

Learn how to swim with tides/currents.
Transition 1
  • 03m 11s
Comments:

I was so messed up after the swim, I'm surprised it didn't take me longer than this.
What would you do differently?:

Not. Freak. Out. on the. Swim.
Bike
  • 1h 29m 1s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 16.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm happy with the bike...about the only thing I'm happy with. :(
What would you do differently?:

Not. Freak. Out. on the. Swim.
Transition 2
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Meh.
Run
  • 1h 15m 26s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

It was hot out there. I saw the fit, fast people walking it in on my out (their back) and so I went ahead and decided to run-walk it from the get-go.
What would you do differently?:

Not. Freak. Out. on the. Swim. And not be so persuaded that the run will suck just because EVERYONE running in my direction was walking due to the heat.
Post race
Warm down:

Dazed and confused. Looked for water. Got food. Couldn't eat it. Sat in the shade for a long time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Freaking out on the swim.

Event comments:

Well. That sucked. My race, not Set-up's event. Set-up throws a class race and I appreciate the extra few minutes they gave me to finish so I could have an official time. :)

You did it. I know how you feel though. Read my Diamond in the Rough report. Things got really ugly out there and I was practically belligerent by the time I finished.

Use this as a learning experience and do everything in your power to NOT do this again.

You faced one of the hardest swims of your life and conquered it.  That is a huge WIN and mental hurdle.  Awesome job!!

You might note that my swim time was 4 min slower than terrible Naylor's Beach. So conditions were definitely tough. But you stuck with it! What QZ said - a serious accomplishment. Next time will be better.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I went down to the beach the day before to scout out the course, and it was glorious...the sun was out, the sea was as smooth as glass, and only a hint of a breeze was blowing. “Perfect,” I thought.

Knowing where the fluids are, how they will fit on your bike, how much to reach for, and when to reach for it should be understood prior to ever setting foot on the course.

As a triathlete, there is one acronym that you just can’t fathom ever having next to your name in a race report – DNF: DID NOT FINISH.
