Has anyone ever done the Deer Creek Fall Challenge through HFP? They have a half iron distance that I am thinking about capping the summer off with.. The run is an out and back, but the bike is 3 loops.. Not to mention its only 95$. Obviously you don't have the huge crowds like an ironman or Rev3 branded race.

I'm racing it with my tri coach. There were only like 12 in my AG last year, so it'll be interesting. He told me (and he did it last year) it s a fun fast course. Do it!

I did the sprint last year as my first Tri; not sure what distance I'm going to do this year; probably not the half as I have a friends wedding the night before..

The course is definitely fun. The Oly course is 2 loops of the sprint and the half adds a bit to the sprint and is 3 loops. I would say it's a pretty fast bike course as I managed around 16mph and not only was it my first tri but I had only had the bike for less than a month (maybe 2 weeks?)

Looking forward to it again this year.

I am debating between this and the Great Buckeye Challenge. I did the Olympic at Deer Creek at the beginning of this year and it is a pretty fast course. The Akron Marathon is the night before, so if I end up doing the marathon I will not be doing this half.

I'm contemplating it.  I'm doing Rev3 Half at the start of Sept, and B2B Full at the end of Oct.

I think that I could easily fit this in and call it a good pacing workout for B2B.

Besides that, a friend is looking to get into triathlon, and I've put the bug in his ear about perhaps doing the Sprint.

I did the half duathlon at Deer Creek last year but am trying out the Great Buckeye half duathlon this year instead. I switched because the Great Buckeye is only 1 loop on the bike and it looks like the run course it completely paved. Plus Deer Creek is the weekend before the 100 Mile Tri/Du.

I did the sprint in '08 and the Oly in '09 there. Just haven't made it back since then, but it's a really great course. Plus, it's kind of like the unofficial end-of-season get together for Ohio triathletes.

Yeah, for a half-Iron distance, you can't beat the price. I'm waiting until the end of this month to sign up for the sprint (taking it very easy after my first HIM in Muncie last month), because HFP is offering that discount.

Best of luck to you!

I'm doing the Olympic - I have a score to settle after my not-so-great race there in June. While fast, the bike course snt completely flat - there are two attention-grabbing hills at the end of each loop. So don't ignore your hill training (unless you're in my AG)!

I'm doing the Oly.I just moved to Ohio, so this racing climate is new for me. I did Great Buckeye Oly, and LOVED that course. I think I'm pretty much sold on any HFP event period.

I'm in for the Oly as well. It's looking like the weather is going to cooperate as well; ~60 at the start, getting to ~70 around noon. The bike course is pretty flat, other than the two "hills" at the end of each loop.

HFP puts on good events.

It turned out to be some really beautiful weather for the season finale.  Great racing out there, everybody!

And Bodaggit... good to "meet" you on the run course!

Yeah man! That was hilarious!

How'd you do? I was struggling there in the last 5 miles of the run, but brought in a PR by a long shot! It was a great day, but man I am sore!!!

I hurt like Hell, too.  It's been an ibuprofen kinda day, for sure.

It was a P.R. by 4 minutes for me.... the run continues to be my nemesis, lol, though I was kinda the opposite of you.  I hated life the first 5 miles, then found a somewhat steady pace where I knew that at least it wouldn't hurt any more than it was.   I saw you finish, and jumped up to cheer you on, but you were (rightfully) focused on your little ones and didn't see me.

Yeah that was my 4th HIM, but the first my wife drug my kids to. It was awesome to finish with them.

I hit all my goals until that 2nd loop on the run. I slowed all the way don to 10 min miles. Just ......couldn't...keep...it....going.....

Oh well, next year!!

I did the Oly. I thought it was a great race and great weather.. I'm sure everyone could have done without the ChipSeal roads, I saw a pretty nasty crash and stopped to see if the lady was ok.. There was a cop right there so he said he would take care of it and for me to continue on. Kind of a boring run though...I did 3 HFP races this year and was really happy with the production.

Those roads were the worst I've ever ridden on by a long shot.

There were quite a few crashes, and a TON of lost water bottles (and even one complete bottle cage set, complete with CO2).

Also, I think that the race needs to be renamed to HFP Wooly Bear Stampede Laughing

It was crazy how many Wooly Bears were feeling the need to cross the road.

"Why did the Wooly Bear cross the road?"
"It felt it just had to Tri!"

I wonder how recently those roads got the tar and gravel treatment? I would think that HFP would have changed the route if they were able but may not have had enough time to plan it out. I really did not like riding on them and kept my speed down as there were a few craters well disguised along the way.

Other than that I had a fun race and I am bummed that I don't have anything else planned for the year. Just means it's time to get to work to get better for next year

I heard them announce that it was done that week and they didn't have enough time to change the ride.
Are you located in the Cincy area? there are a few gyms that are doing indoor Tri's throughout the winter

Aquabike at Deer Creek
They still have not posted the results for the Aquabike. Did anyone else do the Aquabike?
I did the Aquabike at Linwood and when asked HFP said it is a manual process and is not part of the rest of the Tri results but it has been over a week now.

As far as the race:
I enjoyed the course and the weather was fantastic. The roads were rough but I have had a lot of experience on chip seal. I started riding in the early 90's and trained on chip seal roads south of Canton.
The water was fantastic, not like the race there in June where the headwinds on the back stretch made it challenging.
