Looking for a good riding spot with some big hills (long multi mile hills would be great!) for some race prep. Any suggestions? I'm south of Boston, but willing to drive an hour or so to get somewhere. Don't have anything sufficient near me for what I want (Doing Timberman in a month!).

Mike

Hi Mike
Google major Taylor century route. LOTs of hills. This is in my backyard so if you want to ride let me know. Best of luck with Timberman

Not super long, but the water tower hill on Park Ave in Arlington is popular. It's probably only about 2/3 of a mile, but it's a good one to do repeats on. That's how I trained for Timberman. I had a friend who did some of the BUMPS races and he would drive up to Pack Monadnock and bike up the auto road there. That may be a bit too extreme, and a tad too far though for your purposes...

Hi Mike,

I ride a bunch of hills in Harvard (from Concord).  Perhaps a bit far, but if you drove to Natick/Waltham/Weston/Concord/Wayland (anywhere north of the Pike) and rode out, it might make a good ride.

I'm partial to reps on Oak Hill - about 10-15 minutes up depending on speed and where you turn around - but there are a bunch in that area.

No idea if they're big enough, but we'll find out soon!  As an aside, I'm going to ride the Tman course this weekend - will let you know how it compares...

Beyond that, there are some decent hills in Plymouth just south of you.  Not nearly as long, but decent grade if you're ok with doing multiple reps.  Just a thought, although not those long sustained climbs.  (Beaver Dam road, 3a by the power plant, etc.)

Matt

It probably is not as long as you want but there are a couple of decent hills on the main road at Wampatuck State Park in Hingham. The road has very light car traffic and is 2.5 miles long. There are some marked 30 and 50 mile rides that go up this road. Good Luck!

I own both a road bike and a tri bike. I am wondering which bike I should be riding during off season training, or does it matter?

On the long bike rides of 80+ miles I get very strong pain in my toes. I slow down my pace and I might recover, but when I hit the next hill it is back. Could this be some kind of circulation issue?

I struggled on the bike while climbing the hill portions of the course. I do fine on long straight rides but really have a tough time while hill climbing. Any advice or training tips?

The most valuable thing you can do for your endurance training is to schedule a weekly 2-4hr long ride from now until the end of time. Simply make this “what you do” every Saturday or Sunday morning.
