Total Time = 6h 07m 15s
Overall Rank = 1041/2270
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 143/254
Pre-race routine:

Had alarm set for 3:30 but woke up on my own at 3:00. Did my usual morning routine before heading out the door with my gear. Got up to Racine at about 5:30. Walked over to transition and got setup. Met my dad at about 6:30 and walked with him over to the swim start.
Event warmup:

Put my wetsuit on spent some time playing in the waves.
Swim
  • 32m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wow was it choppy out there. 2 to 4 foot rollers. Was careful with my breathing not to choke on any water and lucked out. Had to hold my breath twice when a wave caught me. I took it pretty easy in the swim but was still very glad to see the last red turn buoy.
Transition 1
  • 04m 17s
Comments:

Thank you to the wetsuit strippers! All of a sudden big fan. I wasted some time in transition and I'm not even sure how or where. I just took my time.
What would you do differently?:

speed it up a little bit
Bike
  • 3h 05m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.15 mile/hr
Comments:

I took the bike pretty easy to save myself for the run. I spent most of the bike in a gear lower than I could have been. I coasted down a lot of the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Spend my winter on the trainer. I just need better legs.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Just an ok transition. took my time.
Run
  • 2h 22m 45s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 2 mile felt great. 9:00 min per mile. After that the wheels fell off. Walked up all the big hills to conserve my legs. After about mile 4 my heart rate started to get out of control. Had to walk to get it under control. After that walked for about 100 to 200 yards every mile or so and then more towards the end. Spent a lot of time walking thru each aid station drinking and keeping cool. Couldn't eat my GU at this point, but was able to eat half a banana.
What would you do differently?:

train more. I went into this event very under-trained and knew it. I adjusted my race plan accordingly and was able to complete it.
Post race
Warm down:

tried to eat and stretch. and drink. Found a milkshake machine at Kwik Trip on the ride home. Best chocolate milk shake ever!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

under training.

Event comments:

Ironman does an amazing job of putting on a race! I was so impressed on every level at the level of support for this event. This was an amazing experience and I can't wait to do it again! Thank you!

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
