Has anyone done this race? If so how hard is the race and how hard is it to get in?

Viciously cold water and current.  The water temp this year was in the upper-40's.  Yes, you read that correctly... 40's.

Official water temp was 51F and air temp was mid 50s (mid 40s wind chill)

Average water temp for the race is 55F, so it although it was colder this year, it wasn't that far off of the average.

As to getting in here is their registration FAQ

How can I register for this triathlon?
A: This race does not have an open entry process, however there are several ways to gain access:
1. Qualify through one of our Escape to Alcatraz Triathlon Series Events
2. Qualify by placing first in your age group in the previous year’s Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon
3. Selection in the Random Lottery
4. Enter as a Professional Triathlete
5. Participate in an Escape Academy Clinic
6. Earn a Charity Slot
7. Receive a Sponsor Guest Slot

For the qualifying races you need to finish 1st or 2nd in your age group to qualify.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I have a cousin that just moved to San Fran and thought about putting in for the lottery. maybe I will just go visit and watch! lol. Sounds like Lottery would be the only way I could get into it.

ouch! lol! I guess for me, it would come down to cost...480 for the clinic, plus another 400 registration fee...or do an Ironman for less...I think the Ironman might ultimately win out

My name ended up on the lottery list and I plopped down my $400 immediately. THEN I started really realizing what I had signed up for. Looks like I will be swimming outdoors this winter to get ready

Fantastic race.

To ME, the hype of the cold was worse than it really was.  I got a squid lid and my wetsuit and felt fine after a minute or two of swimming.

The ONLY part that sucks the all the down time race morning.  You set up in transition then take a bus to the ferry.  So you wait in line for a bus, then wait for an hour to get everyone by bus to the ferry, then board, then sit on the ferry for an hour for the race.  It's packed and hard to find a place to sit and COLD...  Probably 3 hours of down time freezing waiting for the moment to jump in after setting up in transition.  But after you jump in?  One of the best races ever.

The race was much colder this year as it was in March.  2014 is 3 months later.  Still cold, but I've done the swim 3X and it's not that bad.

I did it for charity (Children of Peru)... It was a great experience, absolutely beautiful. I wasn't overly freaked out about the swim (I had done IMLP and I felt prepared for anything after the "washing machine" swim that was)... BUT it is the kind of thing that in retrospect I am happy I survived and feel I should have more freaked out about than I was!...I got off course a few times due to strong currents and didn't realize how close I was to not really making it in in time. Luckily, I remained very calm in the race, but had I panicked it could have gotten ugly fast. Furthermore, my race was in June. I don't think I would personally do it if it was in March.

Just adding to this thread. To the Alcatraz FAQ, they added the actual odds of getting drawn in the lottery:

"Generally speaking, you will have between a 30% and 50% chance of being selected."

I'm thinking of throwing my hat in the ring for 2015. The lottery sign up starts 9/1. I'll be scared sh**less if I actual "win".

It has been a few years but here was my experience.

I entered the lottery and was selected. I paid the fee and did the race. The next year I entered the lottery again thinking I may want to race again. I was selected but ended up not registering. If you have interest then enter the lottery.

The water was cold but fine with a wetsuit. As another poster above said, I was fine after a couple of minutes. And don't worry about the currents because they help you.

There are a couple of long hills on the bike course. But nothing too bad.

The run killed me because I was underprepared. The mile running on the sand followed by the sand ladder equaled quad cramping for me. Needless to say the last 4 miles were painful. This was completely my fault though.

For me it was a bucket list race and I had a wonderful experience, except for the cramping. Take the time when you are in the bay to turn around and look at Alcatraz and the GG Bridge. It was a surreal experience.

I entered the lottery today. Fingers crossed. Does anyone know the area well enough to know which hotels are closest to transition area? Yes, I'm being optimistic. Thanks for the help.

Use map view and look at anything close to Marina Green.

I've done this race twice and would go back again in a heartbeat.

Getting in:  If you enter before the first lottery draw your chances are pretty good.

How hard is the race:  Well, people *think* of this race like an Oly but it's more like long course (so, harder than an Oly but not quite as bad as a HIM).  The bike is "only" 18 miles, but it's a lot of hills.  The run is 8 miles and has stairs, sand, tunnels, trail, etc.  The water is cold, but manageable.  The currents USUALLY help you though the first year I did this race they were not as helpful as we would have liked.  One year the water was 51 and the other year it was 59 (balmy for San Fran).

The hardest thing about this race is the cost and logistics.  This race is NOT cheap.  The entry fee is steep (I mean, they shut down San Francisco Bay for an hour and rent a ferry...), hotels are pricy (San Fran is pricey), and most people end up having to fly there with their bike (also pricey).

All that being said, it is WELL worth the bucket-list entry.  I want to go back for more, but I may wait a few years.  San Fran is fabulous and last time (2013) I did a little mini vacation in wine country after the race which was really fun.

This.   One of the best races I've done for the experience.

Hotels, we stayed in Fisherman's Wharf, easy bike over in the am, and walk or bike back after.  Used the road bike as it's a very crowded and technical course, there were lots of tri bikes there but I was there for the experience, and frankly did not see a ton of spots where being in aero was an advantage (or even wise).

Wow, that's pretty good odds! This race is definitely on my list of "things to do before I'm too old and decrepit to be able to".

This raises an interesting question for me. I'm from Boston and I wonder if it's best to ship my bike or just rent a decent road bike from an LBS in the bay area. Anyone have thoughts on this? (Of course I haven't even gotten a lottery spot yet, but it's OK to dream!)

There were a few folks at Sports Basement picking up some decent rentals.   I don't think it would be a bad idea.   But I shipped mine from L.A. with TBT because it wasn't that expensive.

In addition to writing your race number on each upper arm, they also wrote your age on your calf. This allowed me to see who was passing me by in the bike section of this race.

The boat was being tossed around. Someone noted that there were whitecaps on the waves. Another guy said, “This is going to be challenging.” I began to wonder what he meant by 'challenging'.
