Pre-race routine:

my pre-race routine included getting to the venue in Racine on Saturday and checking in with my brother. We checked in our bikes and looked at the transition area. We drove the bike course which and went to get something to eat. I ate pasta and then went for a short run to get my muscles warmed up and ready for the next day. I went to my hotel room and went over my gear for the next day, deciding what made the cut into the transition area. I was texted a picture of my set up to David and he did the same so we could tell the other if we saw something missing. I couldn't sleep even though I went to bed plenty early, I only got about 3 hours. It was really frustrating to just lay there and visualize the race the next day. When my alarm went off in the morning I got up, dressed in my gear and had a cup of coffee. I ate some water soaked chia seeds and texted my brother to meet me in the lobby. We had a 45 minute drive to the race venue so we had to leave around 4:30am. I had a few Tru bars in the car and some water. when we got to the transition we got bodymarked and went into transition and set up our gear. Hit the port-a-potties which had an impressive line leading up to them. Then we walked to the race start. My wave was one of the first, the sixth wave of swimmers. I was really nervous because I am not a very strong swimmer and the waves looked big.
Event warmup:

As I waited for my wave I got into my wetsuit and got into the lake. It was pretty warm for me although other swimmers seemed to think it was cold. It was 66 degrees F, warmer than most of the lakes in Alaska.

this swim was the scariest thing I have ever done. I was not prepared for the waves and the choppy water. people around me were full of panic and it really got to me. I was so panicked that I found myself swimming from buoy to buoy and catching my breath. I considered DNF but that isn't me, not really. I did the best I could but my swim time was embarrassing! I have some new goals now and I will be spending my winter working on my swimming!
What would you do differently?:

I would prepare for swimming in choppy water and have spent more time swimming in preparation.

I was happy with my transition time, it was a long run from the beach to the bike, but the peeler who helped me get my suit off was amazing! I spent almost no time at my transition area, I got my shoes on quickly and helmet on without problem.

The bike course was bumpy and rough, but It was beautiful. the water stations were well placed and the volunteers did a good job of getting us our supplies, it was very well organized. I ate luna bars and my heed as well as plenty of water along the way. I try and eat every 20 minutes or so. At the beginning of my bike I realized that my legs were exhausted from my extraordinarily long swim. I was fighting the waves for a long time and it showed on my bike. I thought I did pretty well considering the fact that my legs were noodles.
What would you do differently?:

take less time on the swim.

I was happy with the run. I kept going even though I didn't feel like it. I ate a chomp bar and some pretzels as well as a lot of water. I was so excited to see my brother looking so strong during the run.

I walked to cool down, then got a beer.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

myself. my lack of swimming ability.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.
