Honolulu, Hawaii
United States
Tinman Hawaii
Total Time = 3h 01m 49s
Overall Rank = 395/536
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 14/29
Pre-race routine:

small bowl Oatmeal, 2 bananas, coffee. No gel as I was planning on having 2 on bike and they have caffeine so I didn't wanna be jittery.
Swim
  • 18m 42s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 29s / 100 meters
Comments:

Expected to do it in 15, wishful thinking. Last year my time was 1 min faster. Not sure if this year was choppier, or I didn't practice swimming at all, or I got stuck behind a group and didn't feel like passing them plus they led me astray to the reef wall so I wasted at least 20 seconds going around it
What would you do differently?:

Increase swim volume vs cutting back. I really doubt I got slower in 1 year it might be conditions or the mistakes I made w navigation and following a pack
Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

This year I shoes preclipped and my T1 is 2:20 faster. I ate 1 Perpetum solid and chased it w Perpetum mix which has caffeine
Bike
  • 1h 27m 17s
  • 40 kms
  • 27.44 km/hr
Comments:

Rain most of first half, classic wind from east. Wet roads w puddles. Hit submerged pothole by Roys surprised didn't flat or wreck. Saw lotsa flats. Last year I was 3 min slower. I expected to be a lot faster on my new bike. I did pass a bunch of people on the bike though.
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

30 sec faster than last yr. Undid my shoes kinda early by the fountain. Took a swig of Perpetum mix
Run
  • 1h 10m 44s
  • 10 kms
  • 07m 01s  min/km
Comments:

Focused on key words: glide and stride. You can see my stride is way wider in photos whereas I used to take geisha steps. I took 2 endurolyte pills at T2 and had zero cramping and felt hydrated. 5 min faster this year
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Decreased volume due to personal/emotional problems in last month but I was able to overcome them and set a PR. I didn't even run into my ex friend although we saw each other in Hawaii Kai in passing. I also ran past her husband twice who was watching. I felt no emotional angst or anything, just did my best and I'm really happy how I raced.

I really nailed my nutrition w Hammer products.

Event comments:

Enjoyed the local feel of this race. I will always do this one

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!
