Pre-race routine:

Got to Burley at 7:45pm Friday night, just in time to pick up packets. Got packets then went to set up bikes at T1. Then dinner at JB's (good food cheap). Got back to campsite around 9pm and set up tent. Then walked around a bit because the night was so nice. Went to bed about 10. Slept pretty well, got up around 5:45am. Had a bagel with peanut butter and some water for breakfast. About 7 got the wetsuit halfway on and walked over to set up T2 and go to the start. Our wave start time was 7:30. Got wetsuit rest of way on and went to the water.
Event warmup:

No warmup other than walking back and forth to the potties a couple times.
Swim
  • 22m 40s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 31s / 100 meters
Comments:

Beat last year's time by about a minute and a half. I am not any better of a swimmer this year but I'm in better endurance shape so I didn't take as many rests. Cloudy morning so sun not in my eyes with every breath.
What would you do differently?:

If I learn how to swim and train I think I can take 5 minutes off this time.
Transition 1
  • 04m 6s
Comments:

About 30 seconds slower then last year. This year had new bike shoes so I took time to put on body glide.
What would you do differently?:

Bike

  • 29.14 km/hr
Comments:

Six minutes faster than last year. Last year did have some headwind, but I just felt better this year. While I hadn't ridden the road bike, I did more commuting so I think that helped. And I'm in better endurance shape so that helped too. Gu at beginning and at 45 minutes. Got some side stitches with 5 miles left so backed off a little. On and off light rain.
What would you do differently?:

Ride the road bike more. I think the side stitches were from not being used to the position. Overall I'm pleased with this ride.
Transition 2
  • 02m 41s
Comments:

Slightly faster than last year. Chuck caught me here but he took the time to put on calf sleeves so I left before him.
What would you do differently?:

Yanks in my shoes.
Run
  • 1h 07m 12s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 43s  min/km
Comments:

This run was great. I felt really slow at the beginning but watch said 9:45 pace! I decided to keep it in the 10s as long as I could. A couple times I had to slow up but then my heart rate came down a little and I could speed back up. Chuck caught me at mile 3, but he didn't get more than 30 feet ahead of me and I caught him around mile 5 (when it was raining hard). I slowly pulled away from and made sure to keep the pace up because I didn't want him to pass me again! Walked up the steep hill at the start while taking a Gu. Then only walked a small bit at a couple aid stations. Faster than last year by one minute.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, this was a great run for me!
Post race
Warm down:

Chuck finished less then 2 minutes behind me. We walked to the car for chocolate milks, then back to get our gear at T2. Rested at the car a bit and changed into dry clothes. Went to see the results, then packed up the tent and went to get lunch (at JBs again). Drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of swim training.

Event comments:

This is a nice race. Flat, friendly. A nicer shirt this year than last. Need to get a size small next time.

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?
