Yes, I know, 12 miles. Thanks!

I was having a discussion with a friend who's doing his first 100k this fall after having done a couple 50 milers and I was wondering how much more difficult (we'll say assuming same terrain and weather) adding 12 miles onto a 50 miler is? Is it just a little harder, or is it one of those deceiving things where "only another 12 miles" is actually a huge addition to the 50 miler?

The 100K I went to got cancelled during the event due to unexpected snowfalls and couldnt get aid to the stations and people got stuck on the mountain so I havent done 100K however a couple months after that was my first 100 at Umstead....I would guess like a 100 miler mentally dont think of it as just 12 miles more think of it as how many laps are left if it is a looped course and think of it as time left not miles....at least that helped me in that jump of a distance. Had to laugh a couple times when I had 25 miles left and would say to myself damn if only I could do my slow 5-6 hour marathon now knowing that was gonna take 8-10 hours ha

I'd say from my viewpoint that yes it is a "deceiving" thing and that a 100k is so much "more" than just 12 more miles. One consideration is that if he's slower, he'll likely be running in the dark which doesn't usually happen in 50 milers and is a rather singular experience. Also, if there are any issues (ex. stomach/nutrition, blisters, chaffing) that extra mileage can be a much greater challenge.

The more I think on it, a 100k is most of the suffering of a 100 miler, without nearly so much of the satisfaction!

I'm considering my first 100k in January... Let's hope that it's *just* another 12 miles.

I'd hope that with proper pacing, a fun event and good volunteers, it could be fun. My last 50 miler was tough and the last 8 miles were brutal. I would've had a hard time finishing if it weren't for a guy who was waiting for someone to run with (thankfully, the last 8 miles of the course) -- I took his offer like a free $100 bill.

How many 50's (k or m) has your friend done?

Completely depends on the course.

For me the difference was almost 5 hours. Yep, you read that right. 5 hours for 12 additional miles.

But the 50 miler I did was fairly flat (Rocky Racoon), and the 100k had some big climbs and is super technical (Bandera).

It was also hugely mental for me. Rocky was 3 loops of 17 miles each, and Bandera was 2 loops of 50K each.

Let's just say I didn't want to go back out for that second loop at Bandera. I'm lucky I had my wife there to get my @ss up out of the chair and keep moving!
