Subject: Anyone using a Honda Odyssey (2005 or 2006) for family/bikes etc ?
I am looking at one right now and wondering the best way to carry bikes with the van. I have a Yakima rack, however it looks like a fairly high reach to get bikes up there. Not sure how the roof height compares to the MB ML that I got rid of.

I think some people use a hitch rack. I always get a little nervous with a nice bike sitting between me and the people who are always following too close in their car.

I modified a used yakima roof rack for internal use. I scoot the Back to seats all the way foward and two bikes fit standing up...front wheels off and forks in the clamp.  I throw all my gear and stuff in between the bikes.  Four can ride but the back two seats would be cramped for adults...who cares about the kids?

Ditto the inside advice, we take the middle seats out, put the two bikes in that space and the three kids in the back seat.

Of the two options you presented, the hitch carrier is preferable to me, the small chance of getting rear-ended is insurable, while the damage from bugs, rocks, dust, low-hanging trees incurred on the roof rack is not.

Empty,

Got a picture you can post or email to me ? This sounds interesting. I am assuming you have the fold flat seats in the third row; if so, how do you keep the trays anchored down ?

TIA

Bear,

How do you secure the bikes in the middle, so they don't move around ?

Excellent point on insurance !!

Primitive, but we cover 'em with a blanket and shock cord 'em in.

We have a 2004 Odyssey and use a trailer hitch. Holds 4 bikes.

I don't know where you are located but for us we have to consider where we live and what we do as far as trips go.  It cost's more to put bikes on top and the hitch for ferry rides to the islands but not more if it's attached to the back of the car.  The hitch sticks out much further but I think they hold the bikes better and save the car.

I like the bike in the inside idea but I refuse to drive a minivan.  So when we have all the kids together we drive a durango gas guzzler and with only a couple of kids we use the jetta.  (I just did not want to be viewed as some sort of "soccor mom" but I'm getting off the subject

We have a hitch and are looking to get the jetta fitted for a hitch too.  My LBS said it's not much to have that done.

I'll take a picture and post it.  Yes the third row is down.  I don't anchor them down since the bikes and the rack are stable.

I make more room front to back by putting the bikes in the back end in diagonally.  The bottom picture shows a close up of the rack.  My clamp wouldn't stay stationary on the bar without the alluminum wheel trays attached.  I didn't want them on there so I cut off the back of the trays saving an inch long piece that I cut down to the little black rectangular piece with the shiny edges seen in the second photo.  This thing doesn't move at all in the back.  I drape towels over the back wheels to keep black off the back of the second row seats.  The rack is a salvaged yakima for a subcompact car.  Tools: A hack saw and metal file.  They cut alluminum like butter.

Hope this helps...

Bear could use the same system if he'd bungy one of the kids in between the bikes.

Thanks so much for the excellent pictures.

I was thinking you had left the trays attached to the crosbar in the van. I'm still not sure how you make the assembly stay in place in the car. What happens if you brake hard or turn ?

The back wheels are up against the back of the middle row seats and I usually put a camelback between the bar and the rear door just to make sure the handle bars stay off the back windshield.  I sometimes forget they are back there and drive like an Andretti with no movement what so ever.  It doesn't keep my wife from stomping on her imaginary brake pedal....

Thanks for the insight, but soccer moms drive Vans, Durangos, Suburbans,Tahoes,Pathfinders,4runners,ML 350's,etc etc.

I have no insecurity about driving a luxury van that is nicer to the driver than my $55k Audi A6.
Also, if I feel the need for testosterone while driving I can choose from a plain old sports car, or my raced out Porsche. Ya, I'll be fine with the van
