Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4 Am and started drinking coffee. Got ready and got n the road by 5:15. Ate oatmeal in the car.
Event warmup:

After registering and setting up transition I had a lot of time to warm up in the water. Swam and calmed myself down
Swim
  • 08m 18s
  • 400 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

One of my best swims ever! Breathing was good was able to draft a little and before I knew it I was rounding buoys! As I rounded the last one I got caught up in the wave ahead of mine and got a little turned around. I figure I wasted maybe 15 seconds getting my bearings straight. When I exited the water my wife Ann told me I was 7:45 on time which was over a minute faster than normal. The mat to clock time was up a ways on shore so that's how I got the 8:18 time.
What would you do differently?:

Site a little better and focusmore.
Transition 1
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

For whatever reason I completely spaced out once I got my suit off. My transition area was in dirt and sand I I was trying to figure out how to get the sand off and get bike shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

NOT SPACE OUT!
Bike
  • 44m 28s
  • 15 miles
  • 20.12 mile/hr
Comments:

Took a while to get going fast. Felt like I was in a headwind the first half of the bike. I only averaged around 19MPH on this stretch. Second half I was flying (at least for me) doing 21 to 22 MPH.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Did ok.
What would you do differently?:

Just be faster
Run
  • 25m 56s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

elt pretty good. Didn't cramp coming off the bike and after settling in I was able to maintain a nice pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe push a little harder
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, grabbed some food and water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much. I probably could have pushed it a little harder.

Nice job out there.  I had the same issue in the swim when I caught up to the wave ahead.  It was a bit tough navigating through some of the groups of people swimming together and that threw me off line a bit.  Despite the early morning cold & wind, it was a fun race!

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

So someone convinced you to get off the couch and truck-it to the finish line. Now what? Here's a look at the process from admiring others to inspiring others.
