My daughter is getting married next month and I need to decide on a song for the Father/Daughter dance at the reception.   We are very close and I know this will be a very emotional moment so I want the perfect song.

She is a very special person.  We've done a number of tri relays together including an HIM length and several podiums.  Last year, when her fiance was serving in Afghanistan, she did her first IM.  After I finished I got to catch her at the finish line.  One in a long line of pretty emotional moments we've shared.

Any suggestions on a song for that dance?

Congrats! A very special moment indeed.

Here is one I have personally thought of.  Ben Folds – Gracie

Look, I'm not the most sentimental thing on the planet so some of these might be off kilter and I tend towards bluegrass so take it for what it's worth:

Daddy's Hands-Holly Dunn
Martina McBride - In My Daughter's Eyes
Daddy's Little Girl -- Kippi Brannon
Daddy, you can let go now -- Shawanda Crystal

My first choice would be something meaningful to both of you. An "inside joke" song even.

Bob Carlisle's - Butterfly Kisses Kind of cliche and a bit over used, but I guess that means it good.

Tony Ransom & The Heavenly Light - When Angels Fly

James Taylor - How Sweet It Is

Eric Clapton - My Father's Eyes

Okay, you caught me in a weird mood and posted about something I've thought about for a very long time:

Heartland - I Loved Her First
Daddy's Angel -- T Carter Music

Thanks.  That is absolutely perfect, I'm wiping my eyes, but alas my wife's name is Gracie.  Maybe I could find someone to sing it live with my daughter's name.  Now that would be cool.

Well after listening to the Heartland song the watery eyes gave way to tears.  I guess that means it's the forerunner.  She's coming over tonight to get my pick but I think I'm going to keep it a secret until that evening.

Thanks Daniel, you ole sentimental guy.

Yeah, I had to hit pause to regain composure before I could finish it. I think you'll have every dad there who has a daughter crying.

And from a guy who hates country music!

Awfully dusty in here....

I really like Gary Allen's tough little boys - its relatively slow, so you would get a good dance out of it

the one line that always strikes me is:
But when tough little boys grow up to be dads
They turn into big babies again.

the music video makes me blubber every time I see it - because its got these big tough army guys coming home from deployment and these little girls in cute pink dresses running across the tarmac to see them

First off big congratulations to you and your family.  That is awesome.

I went to a wedding a couple months ago where the father (good friend of mine) was dancing with his daughter.  I can't even remember the initial song, but shortly into the dance they broke into a 5 minute long dance routine with a mashup of several songs including Michael Jackson, Cotton eyed joe, PSY, and several others.

It seems silly, but it was the coolest thing I've ever seen and they both will never forget that dance.

I would say it takes a certain type of personality to pull one it off though, so it's not for everyone.  Oh, and this Dad ran for Governor, and Mayor so it was a very posh wedding and it still fit in just fine.

Paul Simon's Father and Daughter is one that is high on my list (although I haven't listened to all the others listed above).

Same here, since I could only think of non-father songs that were inappropriate, and didn't want to be that for this inquiry. Congratulations!

I'll second austhokie's "Tough Little Boys" recommendation, and throw in a few more...

My Little Girl - Tim McGraw
It Won't Be Like This For Long - Darius Rucker
Just Fishin' - Trace Adkins (not sure this is the most sentimental song, but it's kind of cute...wow, did I just call a song cute?).
There Goes My Life - Kenny Chesney (not crazy about the first few verses, but the rest is pretty good).

My daughter and I danced to My Girl by The Temptations. I used to sing that to her when she was a baby so it definitely had significance for us. When the song was over, and we stood there a bit weepy while everyone clapped politely, the DJ played Sedated by The Ramones, one of my favorite songs by one of my favorite bands. My daughter had pre-arranged it. I went berserk on the dance floorTongue out

Now, she's expecting my first grandchild... and my second grandchild.... AND my third grandchild. My baby girl is having triplets, and the really crazy part is there was no fertility treatments at all. She's always has been an over achiever Surprised
