Pre-race routine:

Wasn't feeling well so was up at 4. Had a clif bar and some milk for breakfast. Couldn't settle my upset stomach.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 24m 7s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 37s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not really any chop in the water but a lot more swell. Took a couple extra seconds to get out past the breakers. Rollers throughout the entire swim. Swim was S to N again and stubbornly I continued to breathe to my right. Took in a mouthful of water by an unexpected roller and chummed the water a little. Yuck.
What would you do differently?:

Not try to drink the ocean
Transition 1
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

uneventful T1
Bike
  • 1h 06m 22s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 22.56 mile/hr
Comments:

Still wasn't feeling to well but gave it all I had. There were more people racing overall (Oly/Sprint on same course) so it was a little congested. It was a sunny day and it got hot quick
What would you do differently?:

Go faster
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

was feeling pretty dead after the bike. Slow T2
What would you do differently?:

move quicker
Run
  • 45m 46s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I was VERY HOT the entire run. Just before mile 2 I was worried about having to go into survival mode. Had to back off a lot throughout the run. Real feel temp was 112 when I checked after finishing.
What would you do differently?:

Not run a race in Florida in August
Post race
Warm down:

lots and lots of walking and drinking water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

the heat and this stomach bug I have

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).
