DRC Sports
Total Time = 1h 22m 49s
Overall Rank = 57/288
Age Group = W30-34
Age Group Rank = 6/19
Pre-race routine:

2 hour drive to race site
Event warmup:

short swim in the ocean
Swim
  • 10m 31s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

With the large waves the swim out to the first turn buoy was rough. I managed to swim under all the waves so it could have been worse. Made it around the bottleneck of the first buoy still in the main pack. Unlike the last 2 races, it seem to take a long time to make it to the second buoy. After I passed the second buoy it also seemed like it took a long time to make it to the last turn buoy. Finally made the last turn and rode the waves to shore. There wasn't the large group of people from my swim wave so I was concerned about my placement. I looked down at my watch to see I was almost at 10 minutes and I instantly panicked. I sprinted up the beach to the timing mat. Swim time included run up the beach to T1
What would you do differently?:

not really sure
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

felt like I was really behind so I was trying to hurry more than usual. In my panicked state I almost fell putting my cycling shoes on. Got them on and put on the hot pink aero helmet, grabbed my bike and headed to the mount line
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 46m 33s
  • 16 miles
  • 20.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I immediately went on the hurt for the women in my age group. Since I had just done a 100 mile training ride 6 days prior my legs felt extremely flat. I was working really hard but not going as fast as I usually do with that level of exertion. I figured it was from my long training ride a few days ago so I just embraced the suck and kept hammering. Toward the end of the bike I passed 2 girls in my age group, they were going so fast I figured they were the leaders. Little did I know the leaders in my age group were already out on the run. I had considered doing a flying dismount at the end of the bike, but decided against it considering I only nailed it twice in practice. Dismounted the bike normal and ran into T2
What would you do differently?:

Not really sure, training for an ironman so I really had to do that 100 mile training ride last weekend
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

My legs felt awful but figured I would still be able to put together a decent run since no matter how I feel in a short race I can usually hold it together for the run. Racked my bike, exchanged the helmet for a running hat, and cycling shoes for running shoes. Ran out of T2
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 23m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

Not a very good run for me. I felt really fatigued and for the first time in a sprint tri, I had the "leg wouldn't fire" sensation. Before this day the only other times I had felt this sensation was during B2B half and Florida 70.3. I wanted to go faster and my legs weren't going. Lack of speedwork did me in here
What would you do differently?:

run faster
Post race
Warm down:

waited for my husband to come in, he was racing the olympic

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of speedwork because of ironman training

Event comments:

Can't say enough good things about DRC sports

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.
