Subject: School me on Infinit??
I am racing my first HIM this October and have been toying with the idea of trying INFINIT as my nutrition. I have heard some good things about it in the past but I am curious as to what others who currently use it or have used it in the past think. I am hoping for around a 3:30-3:40 bike split at my HIM. I currently use EFS but I don't feel I get enough calories in while using it. I am going to try some solid food but this course is pretty hilly and I am not the most coordinated on the bike. My big question is do you feel there is a big difference between the custom blend and the go far blend? I looked at the nutritional value of both and they are very similar so I was not sure which to get. Also, I see a serving size is 2 scoops, How long is a bottle supposed to last? If I was going 3+ hours should I do more scoops in a bottle?

If you only want to carry one bottle, yes you can concentrate it into one. Just be sure to sip water afterwards to dilute it in your body. I do 3-hour bottles, so 6 scoops per bottle, fill the rest with water. If you concentrate, I'd recommend dialing down the strength of the flavor.

Can't speak to the blends as I've been using my own for about 5 years.

For the HIM distance, I make a single three hour bottle - 6 scoops - and drink out of a BTA speedfil, following each drink with a sip of water.  That lasts the entire bike leg, no solid food, perhaps 2 gels.  That's about 1100 calories total, I don't drink anything but water the first half hour or so.

For IM I will be using (i think) two two hour bottles (4 scoops), perhaps one 3 hour and one 2 hour...  TBD, or maybe even two 2.5 hour bottles, LOL...  with the same water regimen.  I'll have a two hour bottle dry stored in SN just in case the day goes really far south

For concentrated bottles you want to dial the flavor way back as it can get overwhelming.

I started with a basic mix and then "tuned" mine up when I reordered. I have my flavor dialed practically down to nothing because after several hours I was pretty sick of the flavor.

Personally I have trouble managing the concentrated bottles. I tried a 3 hour bottle and it was so sweet I was avoiding taking sips because I just didn't like it. But I do think that most people find this to be the best way to go.

So I mix one 2-scoop bottle for each hour. I carry x bottles for that many hours. Three bottles = three hours. If I don't want to carry that many bottles then it's little baggies of powder and I add water. Then I have a timer beep at me on the bike and when it beeps I drink my calories.

So far Infinit works very well for me.

I just did my first HIM, and actually used Infinit for the race. I was initially using Gu gels and Perform, but after thinking about how to store 6+ gels, I decided to switch to concentrate Infinit.

I started with the Go Far.. I actually made a 3.5 hr bottle - so 7 scoops (3.5 servings). I marked out 7 "equal" volumes on my bottle so I knew how much liquid was each scoop. I'd take a sip (about 2 oz or so) from my nutrition bottle and chase with a big gulp of water, and made sure every 30 minutes I was at the next mark. It was a tad sweet and definitely very orange flavored, but definitely doable (after all I was doing chocolate Gu). One thing that you should be aware of with the concentrated mix is how sensitive are your taste buds to saltiness. I don't notice the concentrated salt but my mom tried it and said all she tasted was salt.

I decided to try a custom blend so I put in a similar sliders to the Go Far, but made it lemon-lime, added caffeine and dropped the flavor to pretty low. I ended up going too low on flavor so I mix the Go Far and my custom for now. It worked out very well for my race.

The benefit for the custom for me is the different flavor, a little less strong flavor and caffeine.

As to how long a bottle is supposed to last - 1 serving is 280 calories so it should be about 1 hours worth; and the "recommended" way to make it is 1 serving per bottle but a big majority make concentrated bottles - adding more servings (scoops) per bottle

One thing to be aware of when making concentrated bottles is don't try to put all the powder in then add water... you'll quickly realize 3+ servings of powder will actually fill your bottle completely. I've found the best way for me to make it is to put a bit (6-8oz) of hot water in the bottle then add 2 servings worth of powder and mix; then a bit more water and then the remaining 1.5 servings and finally fill with water.

You need to experiment during training on what you can tolerate. Don't do something different on race day. Individual differences exist.

I use Infinit as well and love it. At Oceanside this year, I drank a 2-hour concentrated bottle (4 scoops - about 600cals) and ate a Powerbar. It worked great and I'm going to follow the same plan at IMAZ in Nov, just up the volume.

I also have an Infinit run mix but its been messing up my stomach the last couple training runs. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm really trying to decide what to do for run nutrition at IMAZ.

To the original OP, I would recommend doing the free consolation w/ Infinit - you can find it on their website. One of their specialists will call you and develop your customized blend based on your Q&A session. It's free and I thought it was a valuable process

Another reason to consider "custom" is that you can also adjust the protein and caffeine.

I used Infinit for a couple of years.  I stopped using it last year and now live off the bike course and use Perform (if an IM event).  I found that I wasn't drinking enough water with the concentrated bottles of Infinit.  Excellent product but just wasn't working for me on race day.

I've had good luck with my custom blend. I drink one bottle (2 scoops) per hour and that gives me what I need. This means I do have to carry baggies of powder with me and remix with water at aid stations. At IM aid stations volunteers did this for me when I used the facilities.

I switched this year and am very happy. Currently my formula is Ironman Distance lemon-lime. No caffeine. For a very hilly and cold HIM this spring I put 6 scoops in a 22oz bottle (~800cal) on the down tube and water in the aero bottle. Refilled water on the course and just sipped from the Infinit bottle every 15 minutes or so. Worked great. It was a bit thick but tasted kind of like lemon water ice. Definitely sits easiest on my stomach of anything I've tried yet. On the run I'll take a couple Gu roctane gels so I can get my caffeine fix.

I'll throw a scoop into a bottle for swim training too. If you decide to try Infinit, don't forget the BT discount.

I'm a convert this year.  I have two mixes, both custom after a phone consult with the guys at Infinit.  The first is my regular mix I use when riding under two hours as I can fill two bottles using it and be good for the entire ride (unless it is super hot).  For this one I have a moderate flavor and mostly middle of the road in terms of carbs, calories, electrolytes, amino acids and protein with just a touch of caffeine thrown in.  For longer rides I have a mix that has really weak flavor as I put 6 scoops in a single bottle and my regular mix would simply be too sweet to handle.  I also boosted the calories a bit (not a lot) just because of the increased endurance requirement.  I take one gulp of the Infinit and chase it with water from a second bottle (for longer rides I throw a third bottle in the back of my jersey or stop to refill somewhere)

I used the weak mix as my sole source of nutrition during my HIM last month and it worked great.  Felt strong throughout the ride and into the run.  I'd highly recommend Infinit as a nutrition source and STRONGLY recommend you take advantage of their free consultation to set up your mix.

Training for endurance athletics can be a complicated time gobbling monster. This is an understatement for the majority of us that are trying to juggle a full time job and/or school with training.
