Regular 847 Akron | Subject: Phantom pains during the taper I've read up on the things people experience during taper, like phantom pains and I'm wandering how many really experience this. I'm no rookie when it comes to long distance races (mostly marathons w 3 week tapers) and I've done one IM and other long distance tri's (70.3, etc). I swear things were going a lot better when I was training around 20 hrs for the week. I'm doing IMKY next wknd and have been resting up and taking it easy during my taper, but I swear I'm not going to make it. Every day I have an issue with something else bothering me. Training seemed to go very well this year. OMG! I'm freaking out! I'm scared I won't be able to finish the run. Hopefully the adrenaline will take over and get me through. |

400 | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper I am also doing IML (my first full). I managed to do the 1mph bike tip over 10 miles from the end of my last long, hard training ride. Not really sure how I did it but it happened. Ankle is bruised pretty badly and a little swollen. I've been icing the hell out of it. There is little-to-no pain when walking/running/hopping on it. It is just very tender to the touch when pressing on it. My coach already told me that during taper time "less is more". I'm not overdoing anything the next 10 days. |

Feel better! I'll roll like a barrel the entire marathon if needed |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper Totally normal. I've had them and so have my clients. At least one thing pops up during taper that seems like a serious issue and it just goes away on its own. |

Pro 6520 Bellingham, WA | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper From my experience and what I have heard from others it is more the norm to have aches and pains crop up during taper. I do not know how much of it is mental and overfixating on everything or the lack of endorphines or what. The less you do the worse it seems to be so I try to keep the intensity of my workouts somewhat normal and just cut way back on the duration. Come race day all will be OK. |

Veteran 154 | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper I'm a bit of a newbe... 2XHIM and 2xHM... All four times during taper I felt like I was a cripple.... Different things each time and the things that were bothering me during taper did not bother me at all during the races... Taper madness...is real ... Paul |

1053 | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper Happens to me. Then someone says, "trust your training." I don't really listen when they say that because I am too absorbed in all the little pains I have, but after the race, I remember when I was told to trust my training, and then realized I shouldn't have worried so much. That said, I am 100 % certain that I will feel the same way during my taper before my next big race. |

Extreme Veteran 990 Collierville, Tennessee | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper I've got IM Louisville coming up in a few days, and I'm so glad I found this thread. Taper came, and all of a sudden I seemed more sore than when I was training 20+ hours per week! This taper stuff is for the birds... |

Expert 945 , Michigan | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper I've felt great and raced flat as many times as I've felt flat and raced great. How you feel during taper won't matter much come race day. As Popsracer said, keep the knife sharp, just do less duration. Good luck! |

Finally this week things are turning for the better. I be in Louisville too |

Expert 906 Brookings South Dakota | Subject: RE: Phantom pains during the taper Well, if an athlete truly needs a taper, than that means they have basically been working their butt off for 3+ months. A taper is a lot of extra time to sit around and think about how your body actually feels. I'm not surprised people overthink every little feeling and worry about the little niggles they feel. |
