Subject: Your Household Gross Income
Ever since I got into Triathlons I've been surprised at how much I'm spending on gear, race fees, travel, etc. Some of my education and work experience is in economics and research, and I've always wondered what the average triathlete income is like. I've seen some numbers thrown around but never seen any data to prove it. Figured this would be a good demographic to get some interesting poll data from.

Important note: please respond with your GROSS HOUSEHOLD INCOME (i.e. your entire family added together, before taxes)

I always wish polls like this would indicate how many income-earning adults are contributing to the household. Makes a big difference from 1 to 2!

That's a good point. To all responders, please feel free to include how many in your family (children, if applicable?) and also WHAT CAREER FIELD YOU'RE IN. That always interests me as well.

Is it a contest?  What difference does it make?  Household income is household income.  It also makes a big difference how many kids you have to feed too, wouldn't you think?  It's a much bigger difference from 0 to 3. Laughing

Contest - huh? Yes all of that makes a difference - kind of my point.

How about tax ID number....you need that?  Laughing  I'd also like to know how many cars people own, and houses....that makes a difference too, huh?

LOL!

I do think, though, that number of incomes and kids have the most impact. I mean if I was married/living with my partner I would basically AT LEAST double my "household income" - while combining/cutting in half all other living expenses and bills. I suppose kids would have the opposite effect as that?

You're correct, with shades of grey. For example, you're assuming that your partner/spouse is employed...and makes close to what you do. Contrary examples include:

-My parents -- dad was in the 6-figures bracket (engineer), mom was in the $15,000/yr bracket (musician)
-Most of my colleagues who have housewives or househusbands (and even that can vary wildly depending on whether or not they're currently in school)
etc. etc.

It's actually pretty hard to get a conclusive idea of someone's financial situation without asking A LOT of questions...in addition to the factors of gross income, number of adults in the family, number of kids, you have to also consider a bunch more to even get a good idea, including:

-Housing situation (rental, own, etc.)
-Debt
-Location/local cost of living
-Savings/Retirement/Investmenets
etc. etc.

This is a kind of invasive, personal question.

What does it matter? Its a costly sport, period. Find ways to cut corners, like buy used and what's necessary.

If you don't want to answer it, you don't have to.

It doesn't really matter other than I was just curious, like a lot of threads on this site.

I agree that it's not really invasive because a) you don't have to answer and b) the poll is anonymous.

Two wage earners at my house but one is about 1/3 of the other.

The poll is anonymous :)

I think the info is interesting, and it's a great use of the poll function because of the anonymity.

USAT initiated a study in 2009 that has to be more scientific than asking a bunch of liars on BT. Their finding was that the median household income of the triathletes polled was $126K.

http://www.usatriathlon.org/about-multisport/demographics.aspx

In your poll I imagine you're going to get an inordinate number of responses in the $150-$225K band primarily because you designed it wider than the lower bands.

I've read that study and I wish it detailed their research methods a bit more. They actually don't really thoroughly discuss how they arrived at that "income" number. Is it gross household income? Gross personal income? I'm assuming gross personal but I couldn't find it anywhere.

Plus, despite the lack of statistical power of my "study", I'm still curious how the BT community breaks down. Still better than polling first-year psychology students.

I got an A in Econometrics 305 so I am an expert on this stuff ;-)

Your informal poll suffers from selection bias towards higher income triathletes. Poor triathletes don't have the luxury to sit around browsing BT all day, and wouldn't admit to being poor in an online poll.

You could improve your poll by not showing the results or brackets of income before taking a sample. Those earning at the bottom of the bell curve are far more likely to vote if they don't know they are at the bottom. You could further improve it by interviewing people at triathlons. While poor triathletes would still be less likely to answer in person, you could confiscate their goggles or Bodyglide until they fill out your survey.

Disposable income is a better metric but hard to gauge. If you make $250k but you have an $8k / month mortgage, 3 kids in private school and 2 car payments you might have less walkin' 'round money in you pocket every month than someone making $50.

Age is also a huge factor. I make 5x what I made when I graduated college....my wife makes 4x what she started at.

Where you live skews results too.

I wouldn't be surprised if the income is higher than the average household, but I wonder how much of that is due to a common cause. When I was young and poor, I was working such long hours just to make ends meet that I never would have had the spare time to train for a triathlon. As I have gotten older, I have both of more time and money (I really don't mind getting older ), and both of those things seem to be quite helpful.

We're one of those households where one of the people (not me) makes more than double what the other makes (yeah, I'm the poor bastard).

We maintain separate bank accounts--although we do have one joint one for household expenses...of which multisport is decidedly not one. HOw does that get accounted for? There's just a lot of stuff to consider in this.

If you read the study, it does say household income. An excerpt from Part 2:

The average household income of triathletes is quite high—more than $126,000, which is
significantly higher than the national average and suggests that in an economic downturn,
triathletes, more than other segments of the population have the wherewithal to continue their
participation in the sport

My wife and I don't share a single bank account.  I have no idea how much money she has or how broke she may be......nor does she know how triathlon poor I am. Laughing

We split bills way back when we lived together before marriage and since it worked so well we just carried on.  I laugh at my friends when they tell me about arguments over who spends what.......that's just never been a part of our lives.

I have a sneaky suspicion she's a better saver than I am....but I think she'd bail me out in a pinch. Cool
