Subject: New (9-yr old) Triathlete!

My 9-yr old daughter did her first triathlon today with daycare buddies she's known since they were all about 6mos old (if you can "know" anyone at that age).  They did a fantastic job and had a blast.  Everyone immediately said they were doing it next year.  They participated in the MiracleKids Triathlon for the Miracles of Mitch Foundation.  This single race this year raised over $650,000 for families of children with cancer.  In everyone's confirmation folder, they received a card showing the child they were racing on behalf of.  These names were then written on their calves.  It's a great organization.

Truly a first class event.  I can't even count the number of times I heard someone comment how well run the entire show was run.

Awesome!

I volunteered at a Kids Tri a couple of weeks ago. There was a four year old girl....yes four years old....that did the bike portion with training wheels. It was the most fun that I ever had as a volunteer at a race.

Don't know if she'll progress like yours have LB, but she gave 'er hell.  We went over turning onto her back during the swim if necessary, shifting down on the bike but trying to keep the legs moving, and it being OK to walk on the run.  She said she touched bottom twice on the swim (1 due to not being used to the "cold" and 1 due to a back up); she never stopped pedaling on the bike and never dropped below 3 of 6 gears on the hills; never walked once on the run.  My favorite during "training" was working on when to shift on the bike.  We were nearing the top of a hill and I told her she should shift from 2nd down to 1st.  Her response: "No Dad.  I've got this!"  Absolutely awesome and still makes me chuckle thinking about it.

All that matters at her age is that you are out there with her.........seriously, that's all.

If you live in an area of the country that has Ironkid races think about looking into it to see if she's interested.  It's a great environment and the distances are really age appropriate.  My kids loved it.  There usually is an adult race the same weekend at a lot of the events..... you cheer for her, then she cheers for you....they love it!

Keep it fun, make it play time......that's the only worthy advice I have.

I envy you....I'd gladly start over with them it's been such a hoot...enjoy!

Awesome! Looks like she had a great time and now you have a new training partner, at least for the shorter distances :-)

Running does not cause injury. Poor running form does. Running is more enjoyable, and safer if you know what you’re doing. And yes, even old dogs can learn new tricks.
