Latrobe Valley Triathlon Club
Total Time = 3h 32m 3s
Overall Rank = 81/83
Age Group = 40-49
Age Group Rank = 5/5
Pre-race routine:

just set up the bike really - hung around and chatted with the Mornington tri grop - got some tips from Alan on riding in the hideous wind.
Event warmup:

not really - oh swam about 25m...just to get a feel for the temperature of the lake.
Swim
  • 37m 55s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

as always I coulda gone harder! Second lap way quicker than first once i felt more comfortable. Need to get the confidence to start with the pack. Not to hang back for clear water. The swim is my strength need to use it.
What would you do differently?:

start with the pack and draft
Transition 1
  • 03m 58s
Comments:

Well I thought about arm warmers but was so wet and cold couldn't get them on.
Wetsuit well stuck on my heels.
Stopped to talk to the race director my buddy Noel Fenn - who gave me a hug and said Jo you got this off you go up the hill.
What would you do differently?:

chat less like that will happen!
Bike
  • 1h 40m 8s
  • 36 kms
  • 21.46 km/hr
Comments:

Flat tire! Rear! Bugger - happend on lap two - but I dealt with it calmly. CO2 canister administered and prayed I could get the wheel back on - no drama. maybe 8-10mins.
Magpie attack - hit my helmet twice, just went faster next leap to avoid it and yelled like a banshee.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, without the flat my pace was nearer 27kmh. The cross winds were scary - I just held on.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

easy, i was last.
What would you do differently?:

not be last.
Run
  • 1h 07m 32s
  • 9 kms
  • 07m 28s  min/km
Comments:

that hill was a biatch. I went back to my 2mins run, 1min walk. My friend came and ran the second lap with me - it was so windy by this point that our feet were getting blown from under us. We had fun!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

not much - just packed up the car really.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Flat tire, lack of road experience on the bike. Nerves.

Event comments:

If you get the chance to do a country town local triathlon of about 100 people do it. Awesome.

You're bike practice is def paying off! You did amazing in spite of the crazy challenges that were dealt. You're awesome!

As for getting sleeves on to cold wet arms, I roll them on like I do with my socks. I love that you took the time to chat in T1! Ever the social butterfly Jo.

A magpie attack?  Seriously?

Great job with adversity (from Hitchcock birds to flats to wind) and nice race.

I think the swim comfort just comes from experience swimming in mobs of churning arms and legs...  If you're a strong swimmer, though, maybe you could start toward the front and get some clear water by leaving the "washing machine" behind?

Matt

Club or group workouts are very motivating and soon you’ll start feeling like a triathlete, making you less likely to flake out.
