I have a pair of 2013 New Balance 890V3 with about 300 miles on them and noticed this morning the sole has started to separate. On average (road running) what should I expect from running shoes? Or what is a good amount of miles to get out of a shoe?

I've yet to visibly wear out a pair of running shoes.  I guess this is because I almost exclusively run on groomed trails.  I still retire my shoes, but honestly, I haven't really noticed much any loss of cushioning or support with the older shoes even though I have read that there is degradation with mileage.  Some people say they start to get little pains and injuries when the support starts to give out on their shoes with mileage.

Hence, I am likely to go over 500 miles on a pair.  I've taken one pair close to 800 miles I think.  I could wash them and they'd look pretty close to new.

Other people are pretty careful not to put on more then 300-400 miles on a pair.  YMMV.

My current pair of yard shoes are my retired running shoes.  They were the pair I used solely for marathon training last year and were the pair I worn during the marathon.  I wear my shoes until there are literally holes in them.  The pair I just retired had holes worn in the upper section on the sides where it creases.

My current pair of training shoes have become completely flat on the bottom to the point of I feel my foot slip on the white line of the road when it is wet.  My racing shoes I have had for 3+ years now...

As you can see, I don't treat my feet very well to brand new shoes...

You are going to get a wide variety of answers as everyone is different, as are shoes.

I've gotten almost 1,000 out of one pair but my average seems to be in the 500ish.

Racing flats are another story, maybe somewhere in the 200 range if I'm lucky.

250 miles and then like clockwork my ankles, shins and knees start to hurt. And they get holes in them.
EDIT: I run in the Asics 2000 series (formerly 21XX series).

I got over 650 on my 890 V2s but 75% of that was on a packed dirt canal trail, I'm surprised though that the sole is separating so soon for you. Now on my RC1600s I'll only get around 125-150 but they are a true racing flat.

Modern shoes are really, really durable. Like 1000+miles durable. Sure, the midsole will get a bit less resilient with the miles, but it's wont' slow you down nor will you get an injury. (In fact, no shoe model, even the minimalist ones, have been shown to significantly decrease injuries running.)

I've been running pretty seriously with one pair of Brooks Adrenalines that is now pushing 4 years old. It's my only training shoe - I have a separate 'pretty' shoe for racing, but I seriously only save that shoe for race day because of the cosmetics since the old sneaker is so brown from use.

I have no plans to change that old faithful brooks adrenaline as well. The most likely thing that will force me to swap it out are 1) The upper fabric will fail somewhere rendering it unwearable, or 2) it'll stink so bad I won't be able to take it anymore. has happened to me!

I rarely see shoes come apart or "wear out" visually other than I get a little tread wear on the heels.  It is sometimes hard to retire shoes that look like new.  I usually give them away to others who use them as light duty or non-running use.

I use the gear tracking feature of the logs here which is great.  I log my workouts and the pair of shoes I am using and it tracks my mileage on them.  I try to get 400 miles out them before replacing.  At 300-350 miles, I do start to feel a difference.  Most of my shoes have been lightweight or perfomance trainer like ASICS DS-Trainers or more recently Mizuno Wave Precisions.

Last few pairs have been 700-800 mi. And if you count the extra "rainy day" use I occasionally put on them, it's safe to assume I put on an extra 100 mi. It depends on the shoe though. I had been wearing Brooks Ghost and getting maybe 500, then I tried Newtons (2 pairs at 700-800mi), then took the plunge on a pair of Hokas (700mi but ready for a new pair).

Maybe its just a mental thing and I wear the shoes longer since I spent more on them, but my feet and legs have been fine so who knows.

There are four factors that play a big role in how long a pair of shoes will last:

1) The weight of the runner. A 120 lb girl is going to get a lot more milage per pair than a 250 lb guy

2) Foot strike. If you land light on your feet (ie using Pose Form) you will get a lot more miles

3) Terrain you run on. Treadmills, tracks, and grass wear down shoes less than a typical road which wears down shoes less than a singletrack dirt trail.

4) The shoes themselves. Light weight racing shoes will typically get less miles than a more built up trainer.

The second thing to think about is what exactly is wearing out. Often times, runners will look solely at the tread and wait until it has worn away before getting a new pair. This can be problematic as often times the midsole has worn down (become compresses) many miles before which leads to your legs taking a much larger beating.

With that said, here is an example of what I have gotten out of my last few pairs. I am a 170lb mid-to-forefoot striker and did 80-90% of my miles on roads. Most of the shoes below are pretty lightweight.

Merrell Bare Access 2: 280ish miles. I could probably run a few more miles in these but the midsole looked and felt a little compressed which led to my legs feeling a bit beat up.

Alta Instinct (first generation): 315 on the first pair and 450 on the second pair. Both of them needed to be replaced due to the upper tearing from the sole right by the ball of the foot.

Saucony Kinvara (first generation): About 200 miles. The tread wore away fairly fast

New Balance Minimus: 250ish if I recall correctly. Held up decently

Asics Hyperspeed 4: 150ish miles. The tread wore away and my foot started to wear through the insole. Really disappointing, no idea how Ryan Hall trains in these.

New Balance MT 101: 300 miles. These were still fine at the time, I just figured it was about time to change them.

I run in Saucony mostly, some Brooks and experiment w/ others. I almost always get between 350-400 miles before I start feeling a difference. I usually push it a run or two more after getting the mushy, loss of stability feeling shoes get. And I can tell when I've pushed it too far. I rotate shoes and I run 95% pavement. I only weigh around 130 so I wish I could get more mileage. The only wear they show is on the soles.

I get about 600-750 in Newton Distances (4 pairs). Still plenty of lugs. However, the sole pads start breaking down and feet start to hurt.

I run in them until the heel is wearing down a lot (uh oh, now that brings up a whole different topic...). It usually happens around 300-600 miles, depending on the shoe. If I ran on trails (rarely I do) I suspect they would wear somewhat better.

Been really happy with my Asics GT-2000, but at 225 and mostly running on streets, and occasionally wearing them to work and such, I get between 300 to 400 miles, or about 9 to 12 months, I buy them two at a time, and usually trade them off till one gets a hole or feels too damaged.

The first year I was running, i was purchasing new shoes every six months with only maybe 250 mile son them. BUT I was wearing them 24/7. Now not so much. Also, went to my running store and received a proper fitting. Tried on about 20 shoes, then it was done two and it came down to color. My first pair of running shoes were completely the wrong fit. My fault not theirs. Now, I go in the manager sees me coming, and pulls out three to four pairs, and he is usually dead on right!!! If you in Socal, go to the Running Store in Redlands.

Good luck.

Mine last me about a year, say 800-1000 miles.

After a winter of treadmill running, followed by a summer of road, dirt running, I typically relegate them to my kickball games until they basically disintegrate on my feet.

Just bought a new pair, actually 2 pairs since they're so comfy and were on sale, of Brooks Ghosts. I absolutely love them.

After reading the responses I guess I am ok with how many miles I got out of these guys. I might take the suggestion and glue them back together but I do have a HIM in 5 weeks so I was expecting to have to replace these before hand and allow for some break-in.

I have three identical pairs of Asics Cumulus shoes & I rotate them all pretty regularly. This means I have no real idea how many miles each one has on them, but when the bottom gets any bare spots or the top starts to show any significant wear, I will retire them. Nothing too scientific.

I was getting ready to do the Boulder 70.3 a couple weeks ago. I waffled a little bit over what pair of running shoes to wear but in the end packed a fairly old pair of Saucony Kinvaras for the trip (Kinvara Ones if you must know).

While in Boulder I attended an impromptu running clinic where we were asked the age of our shoes and the soles were examined for wear patterns. As I thought about it I realized that these were the same shoes that had been used for my first 70.3 race, in 2010! I would guess that they have 300-600? miles on them. They barely look worn. Weird.

I (almost) never retire shoes and I get a lot of miles out of each pair. I tend to rotate shoes so that I never run in the same pair two days in a row and often not two times in the same week. That may explain some of their longevity.

When I start to see pretty good wear or worse when the bottoms are worn into the foam part it's time to retire them. Usually about 300 for me. Then again I run with K-Swiss blade lights instead of a more heavier shoe.
