Very random question and awkward post because I have no idea what I'm talking about. Just wondering if you guys knew if it's possible to sign up (or whatever it is) to pace someone during their ultra for like 10-15 miles or whatever distance.. just cause i thought it would be a fun experience and would save them from boredom idk
OR if any of you ultra people wanted a pacer just PM me I guess, I live in NC btw so I would probably not travel too far out of that range.. so yep.

Oil Creek 100 had a facebook page and it hooked up people who needed pacers. People just shouted out and others responded. At MMT100 there was a place you could sign up. You would post your name and your pace and those who needed a pacer would do the same. Then folks just contacted each other from there. I'm sure a lot of the ultras have facebook pages now and that would be a great place to shout out to see if anyone needed a pacer.

Umstead is a very popular 100miler. I'm sure if you go to the Facebook page and offer your services, people would take you up on it.

You asked a good question and as others have said above, the answer is YES!   Besides checking/writing on Facebook, you can also contact the Volunteer Coordinator and ask the best way to connect with a runner.  One of the local races here has a volunteer questionaire that has a section for pacers to fill out in order for the RD to help match with a runner.  It asks questions like how far you want to run and what pace you can run.  I love the ultra scene and the people I've met.   It's an AWESOME experience to pace someone.   Look on the Ultra Calendar and find the races you'd be willing to travel to then check out their website for connections.  Do it!  Helping someone reach their goal and get to the finish line is incredibly rewarding.

If the ultra allows pacers, YES. Contact the RD or get connected with the local ultra runners and volunteer to pace someone. I did that a couple years ago for a friend. There are usually rules for pacers. No "muling" (you cannot carry things for the participant, like water bottles or clothing). You should plan to be self-sufficient (so carry your own food and water).

Be careful...it's a slippery slope from pacing someone to actually doing the race yourself...

My experience as a volunteer at a sprint triathlon. My reasons for arising before the sun were not to work out, but to volunteer. I wanted to give back to a sport I’m learning to love.

Everyone and anyone that has ever raced in a triathlon should take it upon themselves to volunteer at just one event next season. It is an eye-opening and inspirational experience.
