Subject: What bike supplies do you bring on longish training rides?

The reason I ask is on my ride a couple days ago I got 2 flats.  The first used my only spare tube. The second I used my patch kit, but I used up the last of my CO2.  So at that point I was 60km from home and not even halfway done my ride, so I was pretty nervous about getting another flat somewhere in the middle of nowhere.  Thankfully 30km down the road I was able to find a bike shop and buy some supplies.

So ya what I had was:

1 spare tube

1 patch kit

1 1/2 CO2 canisters

2 tire levers

1 multitool

This was obviously not enough, but I fully thought it would be, so what does everyone else bring?

Ya I cut it in half to make it fit in my saddle bag better. It didn't really work very well after though.

Haha, no. It was half used, not half a canister.

Just curious what the $2 is for? I can't see an emergency that $2 would do any good for.I might have to get a bigger sale bag to be able to fit 2 tubes.

Well that might be why I've gotten 5 flats in the last month, I get the cheapest tubes I can find.

Duh - to buy coffee or an emergency chocolate bar!

Actually, I'm guessing it is to use as a boot on the inside of a tire (not tube) in case you get a slice through it.

I always carry a couple of dollars in my flat kit too. The reason I carry it is 1. Can be used for a boot. 2. I've ran out of water on a long ride and used it to buy water or a sports drink.

Rather than a larger saddle bag - try fixing a spare tube under your saddle with elastic bands.

I second the Gatorskin tire recommendation - since I went with Gatorskins I haven't had a single flat .

What's the point of this? I've yet to see the point of a "larger" saddle bag, but I also fail to see the point of trying to affix what fits in my smallish saddle bag under the rails with elastic bands.

It's just a way of carrying a second ( or third) tube without having an extra large saddle bag . OP seems to be having a problem with carrying enough tubes for his multiple flats , just trying to be helpful and offer a solution

For long rides

2 tubes
2 CO2
1 tire lever
Multi tool
mini pump (real small as in 500 pumps to get to 80 psi, but it's better than nothing if crap hits the fan)
Tire boot
$10 (for food, bus money, or to stop off at a LBS if I need another tube)
Cell phone

It's a lot of stuff, but I use a fairly big saddle bag on my road bike or I wear a small fanny pack when on my tri bike since my aero seat post can't accommodate a big saddle bag.  Some people think it's overkill, but I know lots of people that either did the "walk of shame" or had to call for a ride because they didn't bring enough repair things with them on a long ride.

I absolutely never leave home without at least two spare tubes...maybe two for me, or one for me and one to give away for karma points.  I once gave away both my spare tubes on a ride.

I also carry at least 2 CO2 cartridges and a tire boot.  Two tire levers and a multitool go without saying.  Oh, and a presta to schraeder adaptor.

If I use my second tube or my tire boot I am heading home to resupply before finishing the ride (if I can shortcut home...if I can't well....I get my thumb ready for such situations).

Bringing a dollar is a good idea. People have talked about that before and I need to make sure I stuff some in there. If goes south, I'm hoping my phone will save me. You never know when you're going to have a bad day and need a pizza delivered on mile 13.4 on a bike trail...

Yep. And here's a pro tip to all of you guys

If you have tapered skewers, use those as tire levers. I've always just used the tapered end of the lever to get the tire off or on. If you do it right you won't scratch the wheel either.

basically what I bring too.

I find the mini pump key, who wants to blow CO2 on training rides anyway. I have time to pump.

In addition I usually toss an extra tube in my jersey pocket

Noel...we suffer from expensive CO2 since we can't order online due to air shipping.  But I found that the 12g CO2 that they sell at Sports Authority for air guns is really cheap.  Usually about 75 cents each if you find a sale or 20% off coupon (comes in like a 24 pack).  You just need an inflator that can accommodate threadless.  12g CO2 usually only get me about 80 psi, but if I use the mini pump for the first 15-20 psi, then the 12g CO2 works well.  I agree though...it's tough using a $3-4 CO2 that they sell at the LBS for a training ride flat.  But if you're in a group, nobody wants to wait for you to pump up your tire by hand with a mini pump.

good point !

I have been using the Walmart packs of 12g for popping my MTB tires on...guess they'd be great for road rides too! cool..

ps. I was concerned about oil residue in the cheap CO2, but perhaps that's a myth.
