Extreme Veteran 909 Westchester, NY | Subject: Achilles tendinitis Owwww... 6 weeks ago I felt a tug back there on a treadmill run. I had really been finding my stride the last few weeks ramping up mileage again for running season this fall. I have been seeing a specialist who said the strain wasn't bad. A few weeks of treatment and another few weeks of no running. Last Saturday, I did some running at half speed, really flat course. Turned out i ran 5 miles fairly pain free. No real pain. Iced it and stretched it. Today. I went for a half speed run. I really only wanted to do 3 miles. But wow. About 2 miles in it felt like it did all those weeks ago. I had to "walk" home. As I sit here K taped to within an inch of my life, I find myself asking if this fall is toast .. I wonder if I can heal this before my next race in late September. What to do what to do ? |

Champion 7036 Sarasota, FL | Subject: RE: Achilles tendinitis I suffered through most of 2010 with my left Achilles. Just resting it didn't help and I finally ended up in a walking boot for several months, followed by some PT and some custom orthodics for my shoes. My doc told me the old addage that if an Achilles isn't better in six days, then it's going to take six weeks, and if it isn't better in six weeks, it's going to take six months. Based on my experience, the best advice I can offer is to keep working with your doctor, find a good sports therapist and most of all be patient. Good luck, Mark

Interesting quote by your doc. I recently went through a bout with achilles tendinitis in both legs. I fell into the didn't feel better in 6 days/was healed in 6 weeks. The advice I would give (which is the advice I didn't want to hear and didn't follow), is to rest it until it's healed. I kept trying to come back before it was ready, and it went back to original injury status 3 times. When exactly is your race, and at what distance? Can you bike? |

It's Olympic instance .. And yes I can bike .. Though at first it was hard to get out of the saddle to pedal. We have a ride of the course for this weekend. I'll see how I can climb. |

Extreme Veteran 909 Westchester, NY | Subject: RE: Achilles tendinitis The run went went. A lot better than expected. I took extra time in T1 to put on my compression socks. I jumped off the bike and put my runners on. With the injury, I hadn't run much at all for the last 2 months. So I was running along, getting past by people I know I'm faster, but there was a more important thing going on. I ran the whole way. 11:30 per mile.. Ugh.. But hey.. I ran it. I feel pretty good today. I'm going to give it a few more weeks and see where it is then. Maybe turkey trot season is still possible. |

Veteran 348 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Achilles tendinitis I had been dealing with a similar achilles issue. It started in late July and I was signed up for an Olympic distance race in late September. I took four weeks off running completely, and did some minor test runs, but only did 13 miles in the course of two months. Then came the race and I did okay, but my legs were got very sore after mile 3 because I had been off running for so long. I've noticed a significant decrease in running ability. For the same heart rate, I am now about 0:30/mile slower |
