So the whole Yanti crashing on her bike multiple times during the course got me thinking (and we don't have all the details yet) but WHY didn't anyone stop and help her and/or make her (can one make Yanti do ANYTHING?) get medical attention?

So, if it were you, IM or any distance race and you saw someone crash would you stop or just leave them on the side of the road to fend for themselves? You can pick only 1 option...

Saw a guy in my race today pulled over to the side of the road, water bottles everywhere, no scrapes that I could see. I slowed way down to almost a stop, asked if he needed help, offered to stop and let him use my cell phone (I've had a lot of mechanical issues in races this year) but he waved me on, said he was fine. So on I went.

Not really the same thing though........

I'd like to think that I'd stop. I know I have slowed down in a few races to see if someone was OK. Probably send a volunteer over ASAP.

I would stop.  I have asked people on my HIM to make sure they were OK, but none of them were crashes that I could tell.  But, that is my normal way of doing life.

There is probably a melon press in it for the person that stops.  I'm in.  A dude.. meh, not unless he is visibly shaken.

Yeah ditto. What's minutes in a race compared to a life? If you don't stop, how screwed up are your priorities?

Eta: last year I crashed on a training ride. I also had a concussion and was bleeding. Other cyclists that I had never met took care of me, called the ambulance, got me and the bike out of traffic. I owe karma or whatever you call it a ton of payback.

It does not matter to me if it is a race or in training. When I see someone stopped by the side of the road I always ask if they are okay, if not I would have no problem stopping even if in a goal race. I am not getting paid to do this and helping someone is more important to me than my time.

I live in a very bike and race friendly area. Lots of Tri and road race people all over the county. Probably because we live around crazy mad hills. Anyway I'm always asking stopped riders if there's a problem. I've given tubes and gotten tubes. I always have my cell during training rides, so if that's what it takes.
During a race, most people just wave me by. I guess if they aren't dead, they don't want to hold me up.

Absolutely. My race/time/bike split is worth so much less than someone's LIFE.

If there were already others stopped though, I would slow and ask if they needed anything. Too many people trying to help often has the opposite effect.

In one of my races earlier this year, I was on the run and saw a guy on his bike on the way back to transition get creamed by an SUV.  I stopped and was completely stunned, but I knew there was nothing I could do for him as I have zero medical training.  There was a police officer right there.  There was nothing I could do and I knew he was not okay, so I ran in the direction of the nearest aid station to let them know that there was an accident and they were almost certainly going to need an ambulance.

In some situations, continuing on and letting someone know is really the better option as I don't know how to handle something like that, medically.  Continuing on to get a PR without regard for the injured racer is absolutely not the right thing, in my mind....but I tend to think letting someone know to call for help is a better option than trying to be a good samaritan.

Can I say "No" and still be a good guy? Mind you, I'm not saying that I wouldn't. I'm just asking if everyone would attack me if I said that I would ride to the next rest stop and alert them.

I would absolutely stop. And I would yell to the other riders to get word to the next volunteer with a radio.

I would slow down and ask if they need help.  If they are fine and decline the help, I'd keep going.

I had been on the receiving end of racers stopping to help during races.  Once I fell from the bike with minor scratches and could continue, told people I was ok, and they'd continue their way.  Once I crashed and wasn't sure how bad I was.  Racers who passed by saw my bloody face and stopped to call volunteers/ambulance.  I am glad they did.

Stop and help do what exactly? Triathlon is my "hobby" but health care is not.

A few years back I was doing a HM in Adelaide, South Australia - it was a winter race and it was FREEZING and raining.

Pretty poor organisation got lost a lot!  Anyway in the forest I come across an aid station with one volunteer and a guy in a very bad way indeed.  She didn't have a phone on her and this guy wanted to go on.  He was weaving all over the place.  The volunteer had no medical training she was just giving out water.  She had no way of contacting any other official!

I had my phone with me so I said I'd take him with me - we walked for half an hour - I had some gel shots, which I gave to him.  After half hour he rallied and took off.

I saw him at the finish and he thanked me after he threw up in a bucket.

I did my worst time ever.  But i was happy with myself.

Only on this forum do people take others so seriously.  Tongue out

I'd stop for anyone just out on the road. In a race I guess it would be slightly situational. I have no medical training, so if there were others that appeared to be taking care of things, I would go on. Getting in the way or being a gawker doesn't improve things. However if someone were down and wasn't already being taken care of I would certainly stop to do whatever I could.

I generally keep moving and call out "are you ok?" Every time the person has said "yeah" and I've continued on.  Not really sure what I could do if they said "No please help me!" hand off a spare tube...and that's about it...so I guess we're in the same boat.  I don't carry a phone while racing, I don't carry lots of nutrition cause I race short course and live off the course...I'm an engineer not a doctor dammit...
