Pre-race routine:

Got up about 6:30 and dressed. Decided to try my new Brooks outside so I lubed up the feet pretty good. I had packed "all" of my needed gear in a shoe bag the night before so I grabbed that, made a bottle of Perform mix, grabbed DS1 and headed out the door.

We stopped at SBux on the way. I got a dirty chai that I could sip on the way. When we got on the highway I realized I'd forgotten my bib. It was too late to go back so I figured I'd get there and ask the organizers about it. Worst case I run it unofficially. It wouldn't be banditing since I paid, right?

We got to where they had late packet pickup and I told them I'd forgotten. They said no problem, told me my number and told me to just pick up my chip. Then we walked the 1/2 mile or so to where they had the chips, then walked another 1/4 mile or so to the porta-potties, then on to the start.

We caught up with a friend and were chatting with her for a bit. Then they asked us to move off of the path because the 10k runners would be coming through soon. So we stood and cheered them, stood around for a few more minutes, then it was go time.
Event warmup:

Mostly walking, a few strides but nothing worth mention.

Comments:

This was a great race! The course started off-road and hilly then went down a big hill then some undulations then back up the big hill and across the dam and down to the finish. When we got to each mile marker I thought "wow, already?"

DS1 dropped back a bit as we got to the pavement so I slowed up to let him catch back up. I couldn't hear my ipod but wasn't concerned about it. As we turned the corner and started on the undulations I could see DS1 become positive about our progress. We were between 1 and 1.5 when the lead 10k-ers passed us going the other way. Lead guy was an Ethiopian. Dang he's fast. Then we hit the turnaround and DS1 started talking about a dash at the finish. I told him I was going to keep it conservative but to go on without me.

Then we turned the corner and headed up the big hill. DS1 stopped a couple times but for short 30-40 second walks each time. As we turned back on to the dirt toward the dam I thought he'd take off but he dropped further back. I kept moving figuring he'd blast past me at any minute. As I got close to the end of the dam I looked back and he was training pretty good. As I headed down the hill I didn't want to finish way ahead of him so I slowed way down, which feels weird going down hill. As I got close to the finish arch he blasted past. Like an attack on a bike race I took off with him and finished 3 seconds behind him.

It was an awesome course and I had a lot of fun running it. DS1 said it's because I'm sick and like to run hills.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was the last race of the summer series I did with DS1 and it was all about enjoying running with him.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got some water. The sweat was stinging my eyes!

My friend wanted to check the results so I walked over there with her. I joked with her about the people in her AG (including me) being beat by the pastor's-wife-junior-high-school-teacher. She was 7th in the AG.

Then we made the trek back to the car which, conveniently, was in a parking lot with a SBUX! So we grabbed a beverage (they were out of peach green team lemonade :( and headed home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still taking it easy. Yesterday was my long run so this one was slow, short and easy.

Event comments:

This group does a great job. It's nothing fancy but they do a good job and the environment is fun. The race started a smidge late but nothing worth worrying about. I don't usually do 5k's but would do this one again.

I LOVE that you do races with your son.  I can hardly wait to do stuff like that with my kids--awesome!  And double SBUX, there's a win of a day there;)

Super, super cool that you and your son have been doing these races together.  That is truly special, love it!  I also loved how you felt each mile went by quickly.  What a scenic place for a race, too!  Nice job, TJ!!!

Edited to add: OK, I swear I wrote what I wrote without reading any other entries and it is just a little weird how Salty and I wrote similar entries!  Great manatee minds must think alike...

Have a chai and smile at the miles...  Laughing

Reading this gets me psyched for the first 5k with my kids (oldest and youngest both said they want to upgrade from the mile to the 5k in a couple that we do every year!) - very very very cool.

And don't listen to the hill-haters!  Hills make you strong (and are fun, no question).

Awesome race and sounds like a fantastic day - very happy for you to have such a great experience.

Matt

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had weight issues. I remember standing on the scale as a child weighing 60 pounds and feeling fat. My family dealt with stress by eating.
