Anyone done the Great Ohio River Swim in Cincy? This is an across the river and back swim that angles downstream due to the current. I am just curious to hear from folks regarding how to hold a good line, how to compensate for the current, etc. I've swam in the Ohio for the Cincinnati Triathlon, but that is just a downstream swim. I've not done anything across the current and I'm concerned about ending up too far up or downstream from where I should be! Anyone have any tips? Is it best to aim straight across and let the current take care of moving you downstream? Or do I need to aim for where I'm supposed to end up? A combination of the two?

I've done the Great Ohio river Swim the last 4 yrs.
It is a fun event , held at the public landing on the Ohio side.
People come to watch to see the crazy people swimming across the river.
From the start you need to angle your line of site upriver so you stay on course to the buoy.
Coming back you need to angle slightly less upstream to holding a straight line. The current will carry you
to the finish. It is important not to go under the bridge until you are past the last pillar. If you go under the bridge too
soon you will miss the finish and will be fighting upstream.

Thanks for the tips! So starting out you actually need to swim upstream against the current some?

Yes, think of a 30 degree angle upstream as you swim across. That way you will be on a straight line toward the buoy . It changes depending on current. Sight frequently and don't follow the swimmer in front, he?she might be way off.
Before you start pick a landmark across the river to sight and swim to.
As you get closer to the buoy you can change your angle .

I first decided I was going to "do" a triathlon in 1994. It wasn't until 13 years later, in 2007 that I actually did. Why did it take me 13 years to get to the starting line? The swim!
