Age Group Rank = 572/988
Pre-race routine:

Wake up EARRRLY, English muffin with peach butter, Gatorade, and coffee and drive down to the beach.

Event warmup:

I don't warm up. Is that bad? Used a portapotty twice, made chit chat with people in my corral, and started.
Run
  • 2h 37m 52s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 03s  min/mile
Comments:

The plan was to target a 12 minute mile (2:37 finish) and to walk through the rest stops - taking water and Gatorade at every stop. I had registered with an expected finish of 2:20 so I knew that corrals 12 and 13 should be passing me, and I let that happen. I was feeling great and enjoying the whole run. There were cheer squads and bands all along the course, decent cover bands that played some great songs to keep me moving.

After the water stop at mile 12.1 I just pushed. I increased my pace every block, and finished that last mile in 10:35...my slowest miles were my first 3...perfect, just how I wanted to run it.
What would you do differently?:

nothing! I raced my plan and my training perfectly. I LOVED this! I seriously had a lot of fun racing this race.
Post race
Warm down:

Find husband, find beer tent, toes in the water, and shuttle back home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing - 12 is my pace right now. My training and race strategy were just right.

Event comments:

Well supported, lots of fun, and easy course. I will probably do it again in the future, but since it's right in the middle of a fun summer weekend, maybe not regularly, cause I would prefer drinking and tanning to sleeping off a half mary hangover.

I just started doing tris this summer and I have two under my belt, both sprints. Is it reasonable to build up for a Oly in early ‘09, with a HIM in Oct of ‘09

Steady is our walk. Ignoring the pain that is radiating from my feet, I continue to place one foot in front of the other. Again I wonder, “Why am I doing this?”

Having three seasons under my belt I thought I knew what I was doing. That all changed with a few new challenges and a bunch of new friends.

This program should be used for an athlete whose goal is to run a marathon in the 1:30-2:30 range and has a good running base in the past 8-12 weeks.

I will assume you have not run consistently more than 6 miles and have never completed a half-marathon. I believe running your first half-marathon is a big task which requires dedication and work.

After you have established the Ironman goal, the most important factor outside of the training is which race to choose? What is your best sort of course, hilly, rolling, flat?

My training was taking off. I had never felt stronger. I was making bigger strides than I ever had. I was stronger and faster than I had imagined myself ever being.
