I've been training and racing triathlons, marathons, etc. for ten years now, and I've collected a good set of finisher's medals. 28 to be exact. I've been meaning to do something good with them other than just hang them on a pair of nails in the garage which is what I've done since 2003. Three or four years ago I bought some shadow boxes from Michael's so when I had the time I could do something. Well, this weekend with my daughter's help I finally took those 28 medals down and mounted them into the two shadow boxes. My daughter is so much more "crafty" than I could even begin to be I just had to follow her ideas and voila - I'm very pleased with the results.

In each box the bottom set of medals use Velcro tape to attach to the black background of the box. The ribbons are stapled in place, and the top set of medals use double sided mounting tape to hold them in place. Once I made peace with cutting / removing the ribbons everything worked out. Again, I am super pleased with the results.

Very nice!

What a great project to do with your daughter.

Cutting the ribbons yes I can see how that would be challenging.

I have shadow boxes in my basement from Ikea and waiting for inspiration to do something similar. This may be the push I need. Plus I have 2 daughters still at home that would be good at this.

Very nice.  It gives me some inspiration since I've been thinking about doing something with my mine since most of them are hanging on random things in my den.  The shadowbox would also would well with some ribbons that I have.

Thanks for sharing.

Yes you should go ahead and finish those boxes.  I did this with my 23 year old daughter who was visiting over Labor Day from Brooklyn.  I do most of my races as destination races with family vacation, so it was a lot of fun to reminisce as each medal prompted us to remember that particular vacation.

I'm going to show my girls this and hope we can put them together soon.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

More than any other factor – including distances in other sports, weight, height – time on bike proved important for faster performance.

I can't get my gel pack out of my back pocket and then get it open to eat! I know this sounds really beginnerish, but what tricks or tools can I use to be able to have my food more accessible?
