Subject: Finally learnt to love my bike...

Not sure if anyone remembers I'm the chick who hates riding, has a phobia about being on the road.  All because of a fear of not being able to stop clipless or otherwise.

It's all changed - I have persevered, saw the bike coach a couple more times and BINGO!  Two hours of constant unclipping and stopping at varying paces, downhill, uphill, emergency stops etc and I finally got it.  His parting words - Jo I don't wanna hear from you again, get out on the road.

Three weeks ago did an Olympic distance race - came last it was the windiest day EVER!  I got hit by a magpie, I had a rear flat but I finished.

So a couple of forays onto the road, one race and this Sunday just gone, I did my first 100km ride. I enjoyed it so much I've signed up for a local event Around the Bay in a Day - 100km round trip.

Humble brag ends here....

Yes! I'm so happy for you and I completely understand. I am trying to break my habit of unclipping both feet for every turn. I'm proud of you for getting the help you needed and working it out!

If you can find a bike coach I'd highly recommend it.  I just googled this guy and rang him and said I can ride fine just can't stop - so I have now had four hours where all I did was stop and start.  It was awesome and not bad value $80 (AUD).  I was terrified but he talked me through it so well, and said Jo just trust me, I will not let you fall and he didn't.

Congrats on the bike breakthrough, Jo. You and I have a long history of bike-hating between us! I don't know what my issue is--despite my general klutziness, I had no real problems with clipping in and out, stopping, or even racing on the aerobars, and my only crashes have been from 1. Dorking out and running into my partner's back wheel at mile 80 of an 85 mile ride and 2. Getting hit by some drunk kids on a motorbike running a red light. I just don't like biking that much. It's better in Oregon where there's nice scenery and less traffic, but still....I just never really feel in the groove the way I do with the run and swim. It's not fit--both my bikes are comfortable and I have a great saddle. I'd just rather be running. The only thing biking has going for it is that you can keep it up longer, which is appealing with good weather and scenery, not so much when inhaling motorbike fumes in 90 degree weather. I'm not sure what advice a bike coach would have for the likes of me!

What's next? HIM? IM? Century?

You have every right to brag, Jo. You overcame a great fear and it's been fun to watch your comfort level and skill level increase so quickly.

Yay! I remember commiserating with you on the topic.

It feels good to conquer something, doesn't it? Persistence pays off.

I went from being absolutely terrified on the bike to enjoying it. Descents scared me to death. After 2+ years of cycling, I finally went up (and down!) Mt. Lemmon.
