Can somebody clarify this drill set:

0:30 standing scull drill @ 0:45
100 free build @ 1:40, 2:00, 2:15, or 2:30

Does it mean scull for 30 seconds, rest, and then start swimming at the 45th second? Or do you scull 4 times before you swim? Then swim 100 4 times?

How does that work?

From what I can tell it's a challenge to see how many yds/meters you can swim in one hour sometime in the month of January.

But I thought long, continuous swims were a waste of time?

I'll try anything once.  I won't be someone competing in USMS for highest yardage, but it would be cool to do it once a year and see if I can improve over time.

The only time I swam an hour straight in the pool was part of a race sim workout for IMAZ.  It was not a lot of fun.

I would read that as scull for 30s, rest for 15 then do the set of 100s and repeat 4 times through.

I guess I read it as scull for 30, wait 15, then do 1 building 100 on one of the times listed.  If you swim a 100 build in 1:45, then picking the 2:00 interval would give you 15 seconds rest before starting the next set of sculling followed by a building 100.

So it would look like:

1) scull 30 sec

2) Rest 15 sec

3) swim a 100, building in speed as you go and have a brief rest 10-15 sec after (pick an interval time that allows for the rest)

back to #1 and repeat 3 additional  times through

You are right, I didn't read that carefully enough.  I thought there were 4 x 4 x 100 but that's not right.

Thank you! This is the next work out.

0:40 standing scull drill @ 1:00
4 × 25 one-arm drill @ 0:15 rest 70–75%

Is this right:

Scull for 40 seconds
Rest for 20 seconds
Swim 25 yards with right arm
Rest for 15 seconds
Swim 25 yards with left arm
Rest for 15 seconds
Swim 25 yards with right arm
Rest for 15 seconds
Swim 25 yards with left arm
Rest for 15 seconds
Repeat all that 2 more times

I'm not used to having a choice of pace times so I just read it as 4 100s.  It's usually, "do this pace and quit your whining!"

I finished the book over the weekend and started reviewing the workouts. I hope to get to the pool for the first time in MONTHS this week. I do have a question though and maybe someone here has a suggestion.... There is NO WAY that I can read these workout cards without glasses (I'm old, I wear reading glasses now). I don't think they make 'reading' goggles, do they? Any suggestions on how to go about doing this? At least in the beginning, I'm going to need to be able to read these drills and hints and all, poolside. Maybe I just need to take my glasses to the pool...

Print them out on with really Big Font on plain white paper then take clear packing tape the wide stuff over it on both sides, take a scissors and trim off all but a quarter to half inch on each side.

Or put your workout in a freezer size Ziploc bag and forget about the taping stuff. Then next swim, just stick your next workout on top, also in the bag. All your workouts will stay dry and stay together.

Lots of good questions and comments in here, most of which I have (or have thought of) but haven't asked.

I have the SS workout package, but haven't started it yet. I made it through the first half of the book and like how it focuses on the catch. I really feel like that's where I'm losing a lot of time. It's really hard for me to think of the "over a barrel" analogy while I'm swimming, but I might have something that makes sense in my mind now. Heading to the pool tonight for my first swim since reading some of the book.

Ok, I've now been to the pool 3 times while focusing primarily on maintaining the high elbow catch as much as possible.  I'm really feeling it in my lats, especially just below my shoulder blade and I think I'm seeing the results in my times.  I can't say I'm going faster than I have in the past but relative to where I think my swim fitness would normally be given the little I've done in the last few months, I am putting up some decent times.  I'm going to keep at it and as my fitness gets better, see where it takes me.

I'm not getting the whole "tone" thing she keeps mentioning.  I'm going to have to re-read that....

I interpreted it to mean the time when muscles are actively engaged, the beginning of and through the pull opposed to the relaxed nature of the arm in the recovery. That's my take on it anyway.

I'm not sure if something finally clicked for me last night at the pool, or what!

I was doing my normal stroke, but trying to focus on setting up my arm for the pull. I've always felt like I just don't get the catch portion, because I don't feel the water on my arms while I swim.

All of a sudden, I started getting farther and farther ahead of my swim buddy, and I could feel the water on my whole arm. I was so excited! I did a few timed 100's (SCM) after that, and I dropped from 1:55/100m endurance pace last week, to 1:46/100m endurance pace last night!

I woke up this morning and felt like I sleepwalked to the gym and did 100 lat pulldowns during the night. Is this a normal feeling from swimming?

That is so, so awesome!! I've found improvements in swimming seem to come in big chunks like that for some reason (I suspect they slow down as you get faster, but whatever). Enjoy your new speed
