Comments:

So before the race I was not going to wear the wetsuit. Water was so warm. However all the top guys were wearing them, so I foolishly thought I should also.

Half way though the first lap I was overheating and starting to feel nauseous. I started to lose ground on David, so drastic measures had to be taken. Every other race I have swam right behind David the whole swim, with no problem.

At the half way point ( so before starting the second lap) I stopped to take off my wetsuit. Many people were hollering at me to do another lap and its that way. They had to think I was crazy. As far as the garmin goes I lost about 1:15 with that process.

However the second lap felt so much better. I did not catch up to David, but I still was second out of the water.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear a wetsuit. It was a poor decision to start that way, but I am very glad I took it off before the second lap.

I swam almost 2 minutes faster last year
Transition 1
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

This was a very quick transition since I already had my wetsuit off
Bike
  • 1h 08m 50s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 21.66 mile/hr
Comments:

I tried to push the bike. It was a 4 minute improvement over last year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 9s
Comments:

I dropped a shoe after I hopped off the bike so I had to grab that. Lost a few seconds there

Otherwise it was good
Run
  • 46m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

This was a slow run. I injured my foot at St. Paul 2 weeks prior, so I was not able to run at all. I honestly did not even know if I could run until I started to do so.
What would you do differently?:

Not be injured and be able to actually push the run
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor decisions with the wetsuit, and an injured foot

Event comments:

I still love this race. It's small, but there are always at least a few really fast people. The roads are great and the organizers are stellar

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The triathletes really inspired me. I watched them in awe as childlike thoughts went through my head like, "I want to do that!" But then reality set in. “Who are you kidding?

Have a goal when you get into the water. If your purpose is distance, then set your pace for endurance. If your objective is speed, then incorporate drills.

I’ve signed up to do the St. Anthony’s Olympic Triathlon in April. I will be 49 in May and need some advice on a good training program to fit into my full time work schedule.
