I am a true beginner triathlete, I will be doing my second sprint triathlon this coming sunday. I guess you could say I've caught the bug and i've been really wanting to work my way up. I just picked up Be Iron Fit, and i want to start training my way up. Im not done reading it yet, but a major point seems to be getting a heart rate monitor. Holy empy wallet Batman!!! Those things are expensive, does anyone have suggestions for usable heart rate monitors that don't break the bank? I don't really need gps since i usually have my phone with me for music anyway.

I like the Garmin FR70. Not the cheapest, but when you're ready you can add a footpod measure run speed and distance, then a bike piece to add bike speed and distance.

Once I started using my HR monitor, it was really an eye opener. Seeing in real time what you heart is doing when you pick up your pace running, or start spinning quickly on the bike or even hills climbs on the bike is great. Instant feedback. I can't train without mine now. I got the Polar FT4. No GPS but I use my phone just like you. Its not as cheap as the timex watch listed above, but certainly not as expensive as many others. I think mine was right around $60. I did a bunch of research before buying as well. Link is below:

I used this HMR for several years including HM training.  It was a great simple to use HRM and never had any spiking or weird HR reading issues nor any interference issues with my wireless bike CPU.

OP, when/if you get one, read through this BT article.  There is a huge thread/faq referenced on the second "Q&A" link.

Also, depending on your phone, you may just be able to get a BT (read about the Wahoo strap here)  or Ant+ HRM strap (example)(~$40-50) and pair it to your phone and use an app.  I think the Runkeeper app has the HRM function too.
