Overcast
Total Time = 1h 10m 51s
Overall Rank = 149/617
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 16/48
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5, on the road by 5:30, at race site by 6:10. Much better than last year. Had a bagel and peanut butter and a small glass of milk on the way. Got set up then went to find a porti-pottie.
Event warmup:

None, I figured if I didn't train for this race I shouldn't warm up.
Swim
  • 08m 38s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started away from the buoy because of the large numbers in my wave. Took a good angle, stayed to the outside of the pile up at the first turn. After that sighted pretty well. Felt faster than the time reflected. Did manage to catch swimmers from the 2 waves ahead of me.
What would you do differently?:

Other than train, nothing.
Transition 1
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

MUCH shorter run with the bike this year. Still takes awhile to get feet in shoes and strapped down because of the rough roads at the beginning. Have to keep both hands on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Remembered to bring my Bag Balm to the race. Left it in the hotel so I couldn't put extra lube on the bike seat.
Bike
  • 28m 13s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Very happy with my bike. By GPS, I had 5 laps (miles) at or above 21.9 mph. Other than having to pass a ton of slow riders, this was a very good race ride for me.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, maybe drink a little more, take a Salt Stick at about half way.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Still a long run from dismount to transition, but way shorter than last year. Got squeezed going around some of the turns by slower athletes in front of me. Some people don't run with their bikes. Took a few extra seconds to spray off my feet and wipe them off, helped a little on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the outside of the turns on the run into T2. Let the slow people have the inside.
Run
  • 31m 26s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 10m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

Great course, beautiful views of the Gulf, North Captiva Island and Pine Island Sound. Lots of fans because of the proximity to transition and the finish line. Only bad thing this year, they changed a 400-500 yard stretch of the cart path and it was fresh crushed shell/rock instead of the well worn shell/sand mix. Pretty rough on the feet.
What would you do differently?:

TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN. And lose weight.
Post race
Warm down:

Water, sat down for a few minutes, walked around with the family for a few minutes then found a shower and rinsed/cooled off for a very long time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

L A C K O F T R A I N I N G ! ! !

Event comments:

This was the 3rd year of this race and each year it has gotten better. The RD is open to suggestions and actually listens to his customers. The changes this year made the course better for both the racers and the spectators. Even though this is "just" a sprint tri, this has become an annual destination race for me and the family.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.
