Overcast
Total Time = 1h 04m 18s
Overall Rank = 60/622
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 6/48
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3:30 am. Breakfast at home; eggs, bacon, toast. Dressed, car packed, and drive to location, approx. 40 minutes. Chip Timer and transition check in. Sunscreen application.
Event warmup:

Beach walk and a short swim. Relax and wait for the sun to rise.
Swim
  • 08m 30s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 56s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started in the front for the run into the water. Start was solid. With where the tide was the water got to a decent depth pretty fast, so water running was a minimal. got swimming quickly and was in the first group around the first buoy. I was able to draft, however , they all ended up being much slower swimmers. I was in the final wave so we started catching and passing people from the prior waves about half way thru. Minimal collisions with other swimmers. The swim felt good, and very happy with the performance.
What would you do differently?:

more swim practice in OW. I did almost all my swimming in a pool. I forgot how much I prefer OW, but with a great lap pool 3 minutes from home....
Transition 1
  • 02m 35s
Comments:

MY transition time was fine with the distance to travel from the beach to T1. Feet dried and sock and shoes put on. Helmet and sunglasses, grabbed the bike and running out of T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 27m
  • 10 miles
  • 22.22 mile/hr
Comments:

I crushed the bike this year. However, I was on a hybrid last year and now a road bike with clip-on bars. I ride this course as part of one of my ride routes so I know it well. Since I was in the last wave the course was fairly crowded for my ride. No issues and the ride went great.
What would you do differently?:

I would go a little harder... not much.
Transition 2
  • 00m 59s
Comments:

easy transition from cycling shoes to running shoes. grab race belt and hat, putting race belt on my way out of T2
What would you do differently?:

nothing, it was very smooth.
Run
  • 25m 15s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was solid. I was able to pace myself pretty well. No issues on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Go a little harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Water and walking....

Event comments:

Every aspect of the race was fantastic and I will do it again. The swag bags for this event were "virtual" translation, coupons. Dumbest thing ever. I would recommend not bothering with a "virtual swag bag" again. Swag bags are great for samples of stuff that I now use because I got a sample "Biofreeze and Cliff Shots" are two offhand examples.

Bottom line: I look forward to this event next year!

Congrats on a great race!

I love that the pre-race included bacon, eggs and toast.  Laughing

Looks like a pretty sweet course, too.  Super nice area!

Nice race. We were probably in T2 at the same time but you killed me on the run. I agree with the virtual swag bags, totally useless. Other than that, this is a great race.

@ Matt, the course is awesome for a sprint and the weather could not have been better.

@cwpeters , I will be doing Longboat Key as well. I haven't done it before, have you?
