Swim
  • 29m 15s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters
Transition 1
  • 04m 44s
Comments:

The run uphill to T1 from the waterwas more difficult than I expected.
What would you do differently?:

Dry off my feet and body better before putting on socks and bike shoes
Bike
  • 1h 51m 46s
  • 40 kms
  • 21.47 km/hr
Comments:

If this wasn't my first Tri I would have dropped out after blowing the tire, but I wanted to finish this race badly. Next time I would not crush my quads riding on chip seal with a flat.
What would you do differently?:

Need to get a tri-bike and figure out a better tire/tube system.
Transition 2
  • 02m 10s
Comments:

Would have put my race bib on a strap/belt so I could clip it on easily. I thought I was going to pin it on in T2. Stupid. I was so pissed about the bike flat and anxious about getting to the run I just grabbed the bib in my fist and took off.
What would you do differently?:

Dried my feet and had another pair of socks. I sloshed the entire run leg. Had gatoraid and better nutrition in T2.
Run
  • 1h 24m 21s
  • 10 kms
  • 08m 26s  min/km
Comments:

My quads cramped the entire time. I attribute this largely to being stubborn and pedaling a flat tire for 11-12 miles. The trail-rock environment was very difficult to deal with, as were the hills.
What would you do differently?:

Train harder on the bike
Post race
Warm down:

I did not warm down. Quads cramping badly. Had to sit.

Event comments:

Bike and run was hilly for where I am used to training. This being my first triathlon, I would definitely try to find a course closer to what I am accustomed to next time.

Congrats on finishing what sounds like a rough race!  Two flats?  That would get inside a lot of people's heads, no doubt!

Sounds like you learned a lot from this race, too, which is great.

Again, congrats on finishing your first tri and welcome to the addiction (I hope)!!

I was very jaded yesterday, but that has now turned into determination. I wanted badly to finish under 3 hours. While I know that may have been a lofty goal for an aging first timer, I felt like I had the training under my belt to do it. I remember yesterday's triathlon like I do basic training in the US Army: It was miserable (bike and run legs), but I do it again! Thanks for the reply/encouragement.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

Experts agree, doing a “mock,” triathlon on the course you’re racing can aid you in your training; performance and most of all quell some nervous energy.
