Pre-race routine:

When I woke up in the morning it was 49* outside. I knew that was going to make the swim/bike transition a bit uncomfortable. I took some extra long-sleeved shirts just in case. I wasn't worried about the water temp, because it had been warm enough the previous week that the water would still be fine, but I didn't want to freeze being wet on the bike.

This race was a fundraiser for the University of Dayton tri team, I think. A number of other collegiate tri teams came in. Wright State, Illinois, Ohio State, and maybe some others were there. Illinois had a really large group show up. The male collegiates went first, then the female collegiates a couple minutes later, then the males in 2 min, and then the females in 2 min.

Several people from the masters group were supposed to show up, but only four were there. I think when the others saw the temperature they called it a day before it even started. Better rub it in when we see them next. ;)
Event warmup:

I warmed up too much for the last race here, so I jogged just enough to break a sweat, and called it good. I didn't want to do a warmup swim because I didn't want to freeze afterward. No wetsuit yet.

Comments:

The first half of the swim I held it together only so well. I had to take two or three short breaststroke/kick on back breaks. After the first buoy my mindset changed to 'the sooner I get this done, the sooner I can move on.' I started swimming much better after that, and I'm pretty sure I started passing people. (I think for a lot of people wet suits are there for peace of mind, mostly).

I think I'm settling into too easy of a pace. I think I should be able to swim harder without doing myself in. I'd love to get down to a 1:45/100 or lower pace.

Comments:

Pretty uneventful.

Although, by this time, it wasn't feeling so cold out, and I decided I didn't need to put any extra long sleeves on.

Currently I'm racing with a running top rather than a tri top, because I don't want to swim with the tri top, and there's no way I'm going to try to put one on in T1. I've been down that road before.

Comments:

This ride went much better than the last time I did this course. Being more familiar with the course helped, as well as having a better idea of how to take the hills. I had pretty much spot on the same bike time, but I used much less energy. I wanted to make sure I left plenty for the run.

I kept it aerobic as much as possible and didn't put too much hurt on my legs. Though, I think the key was that I used the gears much more wisely this time.

I passed a few collegiates on the bike. (And a few more on the run). I may not have been racing against them, but somehow each one felt like a notch on the belt. :D

Comments:

The run went really well. I did the first mile in about 8:00, and I knew it was going to be a good run. I passed the people I had been cycling with pretty early on, and knew I was keeping a good pace up. A number of people went by, but they were collegiates on their second lap.

Heading into the second lap, I still wasn't hurting real bad, and i tend to get faster as the race goes along. There was one runner who was in front of me for almost the entire run that never got away. I knew if he was relatively close on the second lap I would close him. With a mile to go I started reeling him in. In the last half mile I clipped past another runner at a pretty good pace. (Here's my favorite part) In the last 100m I started full out sprinting, and I caught that runner with about 10 m to go and absolutely had him at the line! Sprinting at the end is always a great feeling.

Except when it isn't, because I was wiped out and sprawled in the grass for a couple minutes to recover. I think the event photographer was a bit worried for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some grapes, put some pants on, and did some light walking around. I wanted to hang around for one of the masters group girls. She had a great swim (basically caught me coming into T1). She got a bike recently, and so wasn't too quick, but we ran almost the exact same time for the run.

Hopefully next year we can get some more out! Oh, and a collegiate racer in our masters group got 2nd place overall. Totally tore it up.

Super race!  Well managed and well paced!  49 degrees at the start would make for a shivering mess in T1 but you handled that well!!

Well raced - great job with pacing and kicking at the end.  Nothing like a sprint finish down the chute!

Congrats on a great day!
