Subject: Tablet for Kids?
Has anyone bought a tablet for their kids? If so:

What type?
How old were/are they?
Is it used for studying, or just fun?

Trying to decide if to get tablet for the kids. They are being homeschooled, and there are a few websites and programs that they can use, although I am not deluding myself that it will be all work, no play.

We also homeschool. We have a Mac and an iPad but they belong to the family. I really don't think kids need their own. Two of my girls watch math lessons and they sit next to each other. Our son got his laptop at 17.

Can't answer the kids question but if you decide to get one I can recommend the new Google Nexus 7. Only $289 for the big memory version and it is blazing fast and has a screen that is better than the iPad mini.

I have an iPhone and wanted to get an iPad to go with it but the cost just can't be justified for what you get with the iPad. My wife and I have been happy with the Nexus so far. Although I will say I had much grander delusions of how often I was going to use it than have panned out. It doesn't solely collect dust, but I don't "need" it very often.

I got our 5yr old (now 6) daughter a first generation Nexus 7, mainly to play games (mostly educational) and to be able to watch movies on. It was a bit of a leap of faith to get her a tablet, so spending $200 for the Nexus 7 seemed much more sensible than paying up for an iPad. The Nexus has been great & we'll eventually get another for her younger sister. The tablet(s) will also replace the portable DVD player we use when traveling (no more scratched disks!)

This is why mine don't have them. . I like my kids and missed my 17 year old when he got his laptop.

I got my daughter an innotab tablet a year ago when I was facing a long flight with her to see my dad in the hospital. (My husband was out of the country for work and I was desperate.)

I know they have made better versions of it, but the screen sensitivity was not very good and even I could not get some of the games to do what I wanted them to. It ended up breaking. If I replaced it I would get an adult version with a good case rather than a kid version. It would be more money- but a lot less frustration.

My mom and dad gifted all four of my children Kindle Fires. They're pretty sweet.

Mine both have Kindle Fires, although I have a password on the one for my younger child so I control how much he uses it.  Otherwise I would never see him.  The older one is allowed to use his at school for reading, and so far he doesn't abuse his privilege too much.  Once in a while I have to take it away but not too often.  (2nd and 5th grade boys)  There's actually an app where you can set it for certain parameters (time, content, etc) but I haven't installed that yet.

I should mention that my hubby works for Kindle/Amazon so it's sort of part of our lives and we get to test stuff out too.    I also have a Kindle Fire HD and really like it.

kids on Australia get to use them from Grade 4 onwards - either bring your own to school or use the school one.  i will probably by mine a macbook Air - i love mine and it will do her for years to come.

Ditto. I got my kid one when he was 16. I have an iPad. I had tablet envy.

What percentage does he use it for school? Probably very little. From what I gather he reads manga on it almost exclusively. OpenDNS is my friend.

My kids both have the Samsung Galaxy Note. My 8 year old has the 10 inch, my 5 year old has the 8 inch (easier for her to hold and comes in white).

I have some reservations about the parental controls (or lack thereof) on the Android OS, but being a techie I would much rather my kids know Android than IOS. I have found my 8 year old pretty much exclusively uses his to watch Netflix and play games, while my 5 year old is learning how to read and write, and loves the "note" feature of the Galaxy.

I give rave reviews to Sansung for the hardware.... I love the Galaxy and I'd highly recommend to anyone.

I bought my 6 year old son a Nabbi this year for Christmas. It is android based, just for kids. Comes with the parental controls already on, lots of games and kid safe internet bookmarks. The cool thing is it has a mommy/daddy mode and it turns into a regular tablet. Plus it was only like $150.
