Sounds like the consensus is pretty clear here.

Who cares how slow we all are as long as we all get some medals at the end.

Persnally I'd rather feel like I earn mine but to each his own.

I'm with you for me personally, so I pay more attention to where I fall in the field overall and in my AG, plus how I did relative to my own performance goals than whether I get a medal or not.  I usually have a pretty good idea of what I'm capable of on a given course on a given day, so that's the measure of my success, not what anyone else does or gets.

I just don't feel that giving out a bunch of other medals takes away from my performance, and if it makes it more fun for more people so they continue to participate, then I think it's a good thing for the sport.

Yes, but not for Lake Woebegone(ers). If we are into make all sort of special race categories, I would vote for the 'racers with kids under the age of 5' race category.

The only time I feel "proud" of a medal/trophy I get is if I beat some fast guys. I know "fast" is a relative term but once you've done this for a couple years, you know deep inside what fast is, at least in your neck of the woods.

But since age does have something to do with performance, I think the 5 year age bracket is about right. Maybe for smaller races a 10 year age bracket is appropriate. I did a sprint tri earlier this month that had two age groups, 39 and under and 40+. I was fine with that, as was most people I talked to.

Piece of cake......try the "racers with 3 pre-driving teenagers" category......it's ugly.

I think the consensus is more like " Who cares how many medals they give out? Worry about your own performance, as the awards someone else receives should neither affect nor bother you in the least."

I worry to the extent of how it affects post race food available.

He11, half the fun for me is the post-race chatting and then cheering like an idiot (in my case, exactly like one) for the eleventy-three-bazillion award recipients.  It's just a fun end to an awesome sufferfest.  Keep 'em comin', I say.

If the races "meant" more (I dunno, like the Olympics or Pan-Am games), then OK, top three.  Otherwise, what they "mean" to me is a great day among like minded (at least in some ways) people.

More cheering = more funner

As for how to measure oneself relative to other golfers athletes?  Height.

For most age-group triathletes, getting the most out of there time for quality workouts can be daunting. Think outside the triangle to get a little more.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
