Maybe these two things dont go together, but was looking for info out there.

Turns out my chaplain wants to do a full distance. He was put off by the cost of the big brands so I told him about Redman.

Anything out there any cheaper, he was looking in the $250-$300 range if possible.

He just wants to cross if of his list and actually mentioned he wouldnt care if he just made up his own course and did it himself.

Maybe he'd let me tag along.

Don't forget the hidden costs, lodging, travel, luggage etc.

IMWI is on the more expensive side $700 but is the cheapest as I have lodging and everything at my disposal.

I also travel to where I can race cheap. So when I have places to stay, free hotels, cheap flights, etc I tend to do those races. Last year I did Leadman Epic Bend 250 for under $1000 and that included everything fro registration, to travel, to lodging, to spending money while in town.

I h ave to echo that sentiment. The race price is meaningless if you have to pay to fly your bike. That was something that was lost in the IMNYC cost discussion. A good bit of the target market would not have to fly or get hotels, making the total cost much lower than a typical destination race.

But if you want a low price tag for just the race, I believe he should look at Peasantman in upstate NY. I can't find the price right now. Chesapeakeman in MD is $395.

Any of the Rev3 races can be pretty cheap (as far as entry fee) if you buy one of those season passes and split it between other athletes.

Depends where you live what cost of entry and travel will be.

HITS has 75% off if you register early and there are 2 races in NY.

For $399 he can get a Garmin 910xt and do his own course, fully timed. If his motivation is to cross it off his list, maybe that's all he needs.

My experience with HITS is you get what you pay for (i.e. not much).  Vineman Full, with the BOGO deal is very affordable, and you get an experience akin to the branded 70.3's I have done.

I know you have already looked at Redman but you said you were looking for one in $250-300 range. Sign up early and Redman is $325 and within driving distance. Plus you get some really good discounts at local hotels if you are doing Redman.

Just did Redman last weekend. I would absolutely recommend it.

I did the half and would love to do the full next year.

I agree 100%! I've done the half there the last 2 years. It is a very well organized athlete friendly race and I have a feeling next year is going to be extra special since it will be their 10 year aniversary.

Its also very spectator friendly, according to my family and fans! Super flat 2 loop out and back run course.

Almost certain it's the very early signups for HITS. However, you will almost certainly be sharing the full-distance course with half-distance athletes, and at least in my HITS race, there were probably 8:1 ratio of halfers to fulls, so you might feel like a 2nd class citizen despite your heroic training and heroic race day effort. I actually felt bad for the full course athletes on the course that day - we halfers passed them throughout the day (because we're going half as far!) and even left the venue hours before they finished - I feel like the IM athletes should be celebrated for their great effort and training, and it was hard to do that when sharing the stage with so many halfers.

I'll echo the price of lodging and shipping needs be factored in. Vineman is only $225 right now I think (for next year). I signed up when it was $275 I think. Was cheap but then the hotels were expensive and shipping the bike SUCKED. Luckily Southwest flies there so I "only" had to pay an extra $50 each way for the bike fee instead of $50 + extra bag fee. Add in $45 for hard case rental, $450 for car rental that was guaranteed to be big enough for my bike (that's with my corporate discount), and everything being more expensive in CA, so I think I'll break even racing in IMWI next year by driving. Maybe I'll come out ahead a little bit. I still need to crunch the numbers.

Entry fees are not the only consideration. Do the local hotels jack up the room rates? Do you need to fly?

Thanks for all the help folks.

I think this will help him out a lot. HITS actually has me thinking I should do another for the price.

Maybe I'll do it with him.

Sounds like he wants to make it a family vacation type thing, and in the midwest region would probably help.

But thanks again, hopefully one of these is right for him.

This training plan is written to prepare you for your first Ironman. While just a beginner’s plan, the hours per week start at a significant 8 hours.
