I've bought and sold several bikes via e-bay.  My latest purchase this summer was a Cannondale Synapse - Hi-Mod frame - SRAM equipped with less than 500 miles on it and the price was < 1/2 retail.  It was basically brand new.  I've bought mountain bikes, road bikes and frames all with pretty much no issues. I am very patient to get what I'm looking for, especially in terms of condition.

I've also bought a ton of components from e-bay ... cranksets, cassettes, tubes, tires, seat post, handlebars et al.  So overall e-bay has been OK for me.

Trusting somebody (anybody) else to work on your bike... that's a scary thought. NOBODY cares if a bolt was torqued to the right spec on my bike at 40mph as much as I do

but I get what you're saying :P

I don't entirely understand this one.  What happens if I move to a different city/state? Am I not supposed to get service at a LBS because I didn't buy my bike there?  Chances are, I'm going to spend more money at a store where I get service down the road.

How would a shop know if your bike came from eBay if you didn't tell them?

And FWIW, I have nine bikes. Some wrenching I do on my own, but a lot goes in to a shop. Trust me, they make mor profit for that labor than they do off a bike sale.
