Elite 3683 Whispering Pines, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Not really worried about the jellies...we'll mostly be in full wetsuits and they'll just brush off if we run into them. Really am hoping for some tide at the start of the 140.6, though! And not the kind going out, either! Well, into taper and looking forward to the race. Should be fun. |

Veteran 266 Carolina Beach | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship I've been looking at the tide charts for the race and I wouldn't bank on a big assist from the tide. There's not a big swing in tide forecasted for the 26th. There looks to only be about a 2ft difference in tide between low and high and that is at the inlet. The effects will lessen the farther you travel from the inlet. If there the winds are out of the north with any significance, then it will also lessen the assist you get from an incoming tide. Bottom line it this...There will be some assistance from the incoming tide, but don't expect much. If anything, pray for winds out of the south to give you a little boost. I'm doing the full as a relay. I'm riding the bike portion so I'm praying for no winds! |

Veteran 266 Carolina Beach | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship jmkizer pointed out something else I forgot to mention. The swim start for the full is 7:30am. Since low tide is at 7:42, you will have a mostly slack tide for the swim. For those who are not very familiar, a slack tide is the time between tides where the water is "stationary". Meaning that the tide is no longer falling and it hasn't started to rise yet either. |

Just signed up for my bus ticket from downtown to the beach transition area, can't believe I had to pay for that...anyway. I heard last year that there was some rain, hoping for some good weather! |

What a bummer about the slack tide. I've been hearing a lot about it, though, so I'm prepared. So, if low tide is at 7:42, how long does it take for the tide to start "un-slacking"? Will we get any benefit from the tide, let's say 15, 20, 30 mins into the swim? Looking at the swim times from a few years ago, it looks like they had the same issue. |

Not so much a fun time in the pond. HIM Swims for me 2009 25:37 2010 35:27 I did it with QRKID in 2010 in the slack tide. I actually think it was al ittle against us that year, with that 20mph wind in our faces. DId the full swim in something like 1:10, compared with 4K pool swims in around 60 mins in training, so not exactly what I was expecting! I know guys I swim faster than who did the full in 53 mins in 2009 so I was hoping for that or faster. Don't stress it though- you get the current you get, and everyone gets it. Just deal with it calmly and keep swimming until the end. FWIW, I did the half swim in 2012 in something like 27 mins on way worse training than the year before when I did the full in way more than twice as long...the current can be wonderful, or disappointing, so don't let it ruin your day if it sucks. And d00d, I dont think the tide starts going out within 10-30 mins....I think it is quite a bit longer than that but I am sure someone who knows about these things can help. |

Veteran 266 Carolina Beach | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship The length of time that the tide remains slack varies. There are a lot of factors that affect the tide, such as the gravitational attraction of the sun and moon, winds, atmospheric pressure and even water depth/sea level. Something to consider for a starting point is tide height, which is usually displayed in feet on tide charts. The other being the wind, which are predominatly out of the north this time of year here in Wilmington. If the winds are calm on the 26th, and the tidal difference between the low tide height and the high tide height is around 2.5 ft, my guess would be that you would feel a little push from the current about 30 minutes after the low tide time. Again keep in mind, there is not a whole lot of tide shift on this particular day so don't expect much. If the winds are blowing hard out of the north, then you may end up feeling like you are swimming against the current. Sorry to be a downer, but I believe in giving as much info as possible to you can plan accordingly. That is about as bare bones as I can break it down to. It appears that spending my whole life scanning weather maps, tide charts and swell forecasts for surfing and fishing purposes has finally paid off because I was able to help someone else out. I can't wait to tell my wife "I told you so!" |

Member 53 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship Swam the channel last night. Got in 30 minutes after high tide. After about 20 minutes it started to push. Then again, the wind was out of the North so that helped a bit too. It's wasn't epic by any means, but it was something. |

Extreme Veteran 646 | Subject: RE: Beach 2 Battleship my thoughts on being cold : I'll hate it. The frigid temps forecasted are a total buzz kill. I'd rather deal with heat. That said, here's my list: 2 swim caps Wool knee socks wool arm warmers wool gloves changing into dry tri suit Beanie under helmet extra short sleeved Jersey to throw on over tri suit toe covers on shoes also bought embro for the exposed legs I'll ditch the jersey at special needs if I'm hot. I love my wool socks and warmers. I never overheat (unless it's like 75 degrees, in which case I wouldn't need them anyway) putting another Beanie and jacket in run special needs just in case. |
