Elite 4583 | Subject: Anyone else looking at a spring 70.3? I've signed up for St. George 70.3 (May 3) and am starting a 30 week training schedule tomorrow. The first 10 weeks will be mainly build up and then 20 week training, I know it's early, but I'm wondering if anyone else is already getting into training mode for a spring event? It'd be nice to compare notes, get advice, etc. This will be my second HIM. |

I recently finished my first HIM and got back into training after taking two weeks off. I will be focusing on run while maintaining the others until early Jan because I have a HM. Then it will be full tilt. |

Two thoughts... 1) A marathon 2-3 months prior to your 70.3 is generally a bad idea. There's a lot of recovery time for a marathon which will be detrimental to your 70.3 training. 2) A 30 week training program is absurd, IMO. Be very careful about burn out. Stay healthy, stay active, maybe do an off season training program, and pick up the 70.3 training about 16 weeks from your race. No need to focus on a training plan that lasts seven months. |

Agree with Bob on both accounts. That said I'm doing the Houston Marathon and NOLA 70.3 this spring. LOL.
Also 20 weeks is about as far out as I'd start dedicated training towards a half. |

Yeah, the marathon would make the 70.3 quite a bit harder. Will definitely affect performance there for the reasons mentioned. If I remember right, the "30 weeks" is more likely going through two 15-16 week plans. The second one was the build into the race like normal. The idea for the first was to help give some sort of structure to general training. Otherwise things were too wide open and didn't have the accountability desired, or something to that effect. Kim, would you care to elaborate? |

I'm going to continue with what I'm doing until the end of the year, and then I'll start my race training plan in early 2014. Honestly, I can't imagine a 30 week training plan, unless the first 10-15 weeks are loosely structured. |

Elite 4583 | Subject: RE: Anyone else looking at a spring 70.3? Thank you for all the great input, as a relative 'newb' I appreciate the wisdom of more veteran racers. I have been thinking about this 30 week training schedule and have come to the same conclusion--it could easily lead to burn out. That said, I also thrive much better when I have a structured training plan heading into each week. I think I will look at the next ten weeks as maintenance with structured workouts and then head into a 20 week plan. Mentally that sits better with me, especially heading into the craziness of the holiday season. As far as the marathon idea goes, perhaps a good half marathon would be a better idea, which I am absolutely fine with. Again, I just really like having goals to look forward to--sometimes I have more grandiose ideas than what is realistic. I want to go into St. George in best possible condition. Thanks for giving me some great stuff to think about! |

I think I will look at a 20 week program and use the next 10 weeks to just stay fit. It would be nice to have someone else along for the journey too! |

Going to start the training in January and I'm currently doing one of the "Maintenance" plans that is Bike focused. I've been doing triathlons for 3 years now and did the Poconos 70.3 in 2012. I think this site is awesome and have got a bunch of great ideas already in the month I've been on it. Hoping to hone my training methods in 2014 to go for Mont Tremblant Ironman in 2015! |

I was originally planning to do an Olympic next year and then 70.3 in 2015 but a couple of guys from work are doing it so decided to just go for it. Would also join a training group as will be good to compare notes, particularly as I'm still a newbie. Nick |

I just started 'more serious' training a few days ago. Both races are still a ways out, but I'm back in base buidling/training mode as of Oct 1. I don't think starting in January would give me enough time to train how I want to for both races, so I'll be with you all winter long. Soon, I'll be asking for movie recommendations for those long dreadmill and indoor bike training sessions, but for now I'm enjoying being outside in the nice autumn weather. |
