Subject: My first century and I crashed!

It was a charity ride/race right in my part of town. Had lots of friends and teammates doing it. I was with the lead group...only 7 of us off the front when I went down at mile 93. One guy slowed suddenly, my teammate in front swerved a little and I hit his wheel...for a split second I thought I was going to be able to stay up then I was bouncing on the tarmac. According to Strava, I was only down for about a minute. A police officer had stopped when I crashed and helped me up, I had to fight him to get my bike back. I pretty much landed face first going 25 mph so there was a lot of blood. I managed to get going again and finished just one minute behind the leaders. I was 8th overall, first female so it was definitely worth finishing! As soon as I crossed the finish, I realized how much I hurt. I went to medical to get cleaned up but they took one look at my chin and said I needed to go to Urgent Care. I got 8 stitches in my chin, lots of bruises and road rash. On the way to the doctor I dropped my bike off and they straightened her out. The only thing broken was a shoe. Very lucky!

I loved the distance and think I would be better at that distance than the shorter races.

102 miles/4:21:45 = 23.3mph

Wow, glad you're OK! Sounds like you did a great ride too. Sucks you crashed though. Gotta watch those wheels... Congrats on a great ride though!

Wow that's fast.

Glad you're ok. We have had a rash of crashed lately with my groups and hope I don't get tangled up in them

I am healing up very well! I didn't take any time off the bike. I crashed 3 years ago...broken ribs, lots of road rash, banged up knee...and waited weeks to get back on the bike because I was so freaked out. This time. I wasn't freaked out, felt lucky. I just did a hard group ride today and feel 100%. Stitches are healing nicely too, should have a great scar! :-

I have a few scratches on my new Madone but she is fine. I actually took my bike to the LBS before I went and got stitches, they had her straightened out the same day! I went down on the non derailler side, which always helps

  • Atta girl!!!!

Edit: My Felt Z4 is in the shop getting checked out too, after a stupid crash on Saturday. Was passing a lady who was wearing headphones (I couldn't see them under her hair) who couldn't hear my "On your left!" as I was passing. She just turned straight left right across my path and next thing I was on the ground..

My cyclist instinct kicked in and as I got up, my first words to her were "Is your bike okay?!?" Not "Are you okay?" Not "Am I okay?" Fiance then proceeds to give her a lecture on signaling, being aware of surroundings, not riding with headphones, etc, while I checked out my bike. The front wheel is slightly out of true, but I wanted it checked out in whole since it's carbon and don't have the trained eye my shop (which I really trust a lot) does for issues...

I never imagined that 350 yards broken down into 7 REALLY long lanes would be so big! I gasped out loud and told Grady that maybe I had underestimated the swim.
