From the Globe. Not a happy outcome.
A body was pulled from Walden Pond Tuesday, consistent with that of a 63-year-old man who went missing in the water Sunday night, State Police said.
The body of the adult male was recovered from the pond at 11:48 a.m. It was found in about 20 feet of water, approximately 75 yards from the shore by the southern side of the pond, State Police said.
State Police have not confirmed that the victim is the missing man, but the appearance is consistent “with that of the 63-year-old man who was last seen swimming in the pond early Sunday evening,’’ their statement said.
The missing man, a Lincoln resident authorities have not named, disappeared after going for an evening swim with his wife and a woman friend who returned to shore while he remained in the water. The man, a regular swimmer at Walden Pond, was reported missing around 6:45 p.m. Sunday.
For the past two days, State Police divers and Concord public safety officers searched the pond and the network of trails around it. On Monday, dive teams used sonar to search the glacial pond, which is 100 feet deep in the center, while officers on horseback and all-terrain vehicles searched the woods.
The state park, a popular spot for distance swimmers, was closed during the search.
A 7-year-old boy was rescued after nearly drowning in the pond in July. The popular tourist destination, where philosopher Henry David Thoreau lived for two years beginning in 1845, draws some 600,000 visitors each year.
