I do ALL my OWS at Ohio St Beach, and I'm down there 2-3x a week from June to September.

It's perfect for building swim confidence because, unless you swim early in the morning, it's very seldom calm, due to all the boats. A few times each summer I'll find myself swimming in 2ft chop. It's not easy, but it's fun, and it'll make you far more confident should the conditions be somewhate ocean-like. But, at the same time it's less than 5ft deep for most of the way to Oak Street, so if you get a little rattled, stand up.

Let's just hope it's warm enough to swim in late April ...

Hi All!
newbie to actually posting on these boards - but am signing up for Racine and it will be my first HIM. Am excited and nervous which will hopefully help me keep my focus on my training. I debated about Steelhead as I have friends doing both races - and finally decided Racine because the swim is my favorite part and I would be heartbroken if the swim got cancelled. Also I am hoping that the views of the lake and through the zoo will help distract me on the dreaded run!

I have two questions on the swim:

1. Do they create a "tunnel" with boats/boards/lifeguards etc on one side and buoys on the other?

And

2. Does the sun come up across lake so from the lake to shore?

Reason I ask is I breathe to my left and from the course I coul be looking at a case of sun in my eyes and also as I like to also sight when I breathe I may not have much to judge distance against.

Thanks

1. Not really.  There are some out there but not many.

2. Yes, sun rises from lake to shore.

3. Since you breath to your left, you may also have to deal with waves.  They will also come from your left and might make breathing difficult.  You have time to try to work on bilateral before the race.  I would suggest attempting to learn to breath on your right.

No problem.  I've only done the HIM once but I've raced in the Spirit of Racine when there was also a sprint 2x before that so I know just how unpredictable the water there can be.  It can be warm and still or bone chilling and 3 foot swells.  My second year doing the sprint the water was 55.  Took my breath away.
