Bored at the end of a long week with food on my mind got me to thinking.  What's your favorite local food you can only get where you live because it's only made the RIGHT way where you live?

For me it's easy, Philly = Cheese steak - without!

Tri-tip steak, cooked Santa Maria style.  I'm a bit partial to my own dry rub however there are a couple of local restaurants that do a good job.

While there's plenty of good food here in Seattle, nothing that really stands out as "local" unless you count Salmon which I say is more PNW fare.

However, 20+ years after moving away I still miss the food from New Mexico. Particularly the northern part of the state. Nothing comes close to NM style chile and sopapillas.

There's plenty of solid options for deep dish pizza here in Chi-town:
Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Pequods, Gino's East.

Outsite of that, I LOVE the overstuffed sandwiches at Lucky's near Wrigley. Not sure that counts as "local food", but it's so good.

Favorite local food? No. But you know the old saying about pizza and sex. Whoever came up with that has never tried St Louis style pizza. It is the nastiest thing, cracker thin with a rancid cheese. Completely unedible, but everyone here goes on and on about how our pizza is the best. Ironically, the best pizza in town is a company called Pi that makes a Chicago style pizza.

At the Imogene Emerald Isle - Irish Nachos ( nothing super special, but I really like it)

In Des Moines - Fongs Pizza - Crab Rangoon Pizza

In Des Moines - Grazziano's Special Italian Sausage.  We make a sandwich called a "grinder" with it.  YUMMMMMMMMMMM

Vietnam--I have a couple. Grilled chicken with lemongrass and chili. (ga nuong va xa ot). It's either served with rice and veggies on the side, or as a meal in a bowl with rice noodles and a whole bunch of garnishes--pickled veggies, cucumbers, lettuce, herbs, peanuts, French fried onions, etc. The former's better when it's not super-hot outside; the latter is one of the few things I can get down for dinner when the heat index is in the triple digits. The other dish is one I have only occasionally as I'd have to go downtown for it--It's called bo luc lak and essentially is a stir-fry with steak, fries, A1 and chili sauce, and onions. Probably a fusion of American and Vietnamese tastes from the war years. Sounds gross but if you are having a red meat craving, it's actually quite good.

Oregon--Pancakes from a particular restaurant. They use buckwheat flour and oatmeal and they are amazing with bananas and walnuts and their homemade all-fruit jam. My favorite feed after Saturday morning long master's workout.

Life long Philly resident and the cheesesteak is way overrated. Much prefer roast pork sandwich with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe on a solid roll.

SO WRONG!!!  :-)  We actually buy Provel cheese when driving through and bring it back to Iowa in the 10 - 20 lbs at a time and have large family dinners based around St. Louis style pizza.  YUMMMMM

Probably the most local thing I can think of is Beef on Wek. You can get this in a 20 mile radius of Buffalo, NY and nowhere else. It's what the pretzel roll wishes it could be.

And yeah, Primanti's sammiches are crack.

Haha!  No, no, no, I'll eat squirrel, but I'm not really a fan.  I think stuff always tastes better when you catch it/hunt it/gather it/grow it--so any meal with that component is just automatically awesome :)

I have regional favorites, but nothing that's really locally specific.  What I might say for my favorite local food is "my grandmother's food", but now the only way I get that is at my mom's or cooking it myself.

My grandmother was a fabulous cook... and a wonderful lady.

Carry on.  This is sweet torture...

Some of our local foods may make people from other parts of the country gag, but give them a chance, and you might be surprised.

Hog maw sounds scary, but it's tasty!

Snitz and knepp is delicious!

And the rest of the country has no idea how to do chicken and waffles!

Then, there's Smittie's soft pretzels!  You haven't had a soft pretzel until you've had one of these puppies!

Mmmmmm!!!
