Hog maw sounds scary, but it's tasty!

Snitz and knepp is delicious!

And the rest of the country has no idea how to do chicken and waffles!

Then, there's Smittie's soft pretzels!  You haven't had a soft pretzel until you've had one of these puppies!

Mmmmmm!!!

soft pretzels is one of the things that got me thinking about this. I read today the PA is the US center of the pretzel industry. Due to the Dutch influence. But figured you could probably get a decent pretzel around the country. You peaked my interest with chicken and waffles?

Fair point. Cheesesteak is an easy fix, but few are really worth the effort. There are a handful of good ones, but not worth jacking this thread over. Like Tony Luke's as well, but the only one that counts is on Oregon Ave.

Yeah, I've never had pretzels like Smittie's anywhere else.  I'm not sure what they do with them, but the flavor and texture are very different from the usual pretzel bites or Super Pretzels you find every where else.  I have relatives who have moved out of the area, and they used to have us ship them pretzels a couple times a year, and they would load up with a couple dozen to take home whenever they visited.  If you're ever in the area, you need to try them.

The chicken and waffles are kind of like thanksgiving dinner with the gravy.

It is the nastiest thing, cracker thin with a rancid cheese. Completely unedible, but everyone here goes on and on about how our pizza is the best. Ironically, the best pizza in town is a company called Pi that makes a Chicago style pizza.

SO WRONG!!!  :-)  We actually buy Provel cheese when driving through and bring it back to Iowa in the 10 - 20 lbs at a time and have large family dinners based around St. Louis style pizza.  YUMMMMM

Calling provel a cheese is an insult to all other cheeses. There's a reason that crap is not available outside of St Louis. But one the St. Louis got right is gooey butter cake. Never heard of the stuff before I moved here, but dayum.

Neither Husband or I could come up with a good answer to this (he's from Philly and is on the cheese steak bandwagon).

We decided it's state fair related, we have an amazing array of "things on a stick" that we think about all year.

Also, lots of great local beers!   I think our best is Surly, which is not widely distributed yet.  Some day you all will get to appreciate this, I hope.   This is something I would get if I left town and came home to visit, for sure.

Anything labelled Cajun or Creole outside of south Louisiana is rarely worth trying: gumbo, jambalaya, etouffee, boudin, cracklins, and so on. A good shrimp or oyster poboy is getting harder to find even locally.

And now I'm hungry.

Love to go to Louisiana one day for some jambalaya and to try a poboy. Today's lunch just might be pastrami (or corned beef) on rye with a beer after reading through these..... Maybe on a stick

Ahh, if we're including beer this is where Seattle shines. Black Raven, Mac and Jacks, Silver City, Iron Hose, too many to list. These are what I would miss if we moved away.

There's plenty of solid options for deep dish pizza here in Chi-town:
Lou Malnati's, Giordano's, Pequods, Gino's East.

Outsite of that, I LOVE the overstuffed sandwiches at Lucky's near Wrigley. Not sure that counts as "local food", but it's so good.

I'm probably one of the few Chicagoans that doesn't like Chicago-style deep dish. But I'm a vegetarian and bc of the order of deep dish (crust, cheese, meat, veggies, sauce), it's like biting into a giant hunk of cheese bc the veggies don't sink into the cheese the way that the meat does.

Chicago also is known for hot dogs and Italian beef, but obviously I don't eat those either!

So I guess I would say Chicago-style thin crust pizza is best here. Although variations of that type of thin crust are common throughout the Midwest, I think that Chicago style thin crust is better than St. Louis style or the other kind I have eaten.

Oh and Intelligentsia coffee! That stuff is crazy good. I actually enjoy the taste of their beans but you have to make it at home how they suggest: with a Chemex. It's almost like drinking a nice wine.

Local means either fresh grouper, smoked mullet, or gator bites. I'll take the grouper, please. Red fish or sea trout does a fine job as well.

I'm not from Texas but I've lived here awhile and you can only fins TexMex in Texas. Anywhere else and it's just a bad attempt at Mexican food.
And Round Rock donuts are quite tasty.

However, 20+ years after moving away I still miss the food from New Mexico. Particularly the northern part of the state. Nothing comes close to NM style chile and sopapillas.

x bazillion. I have tried (and tried and tried) to make my own but they aren't the same. It has gotten to the point that when I return to New Mexico - we outline our "need to visit" restaurants for the entire visit. I have no interest in a home-cooked meal while visiting. We have found a place that will sell us a dozen tamales - so we bring our cooler, stock up and fly home to carefully portioned out servings.

One year, my dad got a bunch of roasted Hatch green chiles, froze them and shipped them to us. That was glorious.

Embarrassed to say I have never been!  I so want to go there because I love fried chicken.  Something always seems to get in my way when it comes to that place.
