Hummm, there's gotta be more than just three of us....

How's the training going guys?! Duke's not really that far off now.... yikes. I haven't really been thinking too much about it b/c I'm using it as a long-course tune up for IMFL. But I don't wanna have my @ss handed to me b/c I'm not prepared--from what I've heard from people who did it last year, it's a tough, hot course. Should be fun! ;)

We're nowhere near where we need to be to do a half all by ourselves, so we're gonna relay. Well, if we can find a third. Chris said he'd do any leg, which is good, because I still suck at swimming. Let me know if you find a coupon for the entry fee!

I'm doing Duke Liver as a race rehearsal for IMFL as well. Lots of hills. Should be fun!

Last year this was my first half. I am going back to try and cut time off my performance. It was very warm, but the hills got me. I have been trying to train more this year with hills and lifting to get my legs stronger. It is a fun race, but it probably would have been more fun had I been better prepared.

I'm going with the group jeff has got together for 8/19 to ride the bike course. maybe I will see you there.

How hilly is the bike? I have trouble transfering the elev profile on the website to a vision of what a real road would be like. I ask because I have a disc wheel that I got for my birthday that I haven't really taken out for a good ride yet and was thinking about riding it for Duke Half. Since this race is just a dress rehearsal for IMFL, it seems like a good time to break out the disc.
I'm used to riding around north mecklenburg, iredell, rowan & davie counties and I wouldn't imagine that this would be any hillier. Am I wrong? (I lived my entire life in NC, but I can count on one hand the number of times I've been to Raleigh).

Thanks for the insight.

It is somewhat similar to Bandit's bike course, from my recollection and talking to a couple of people after last Saturday's race that had done both courses. Obviously, there is nothing like the big climb on Bandit's, and the hills may not be as steep, but I remember it being up and down a lot. I would think another similar course may be parts of the Collier Lilly ride in Davidson, though I seem to recall more climbing at Duke, but it just may be my recurring nightmare of that whole race. Last year, all I wanted the last 7 miles or so of that ride was to be off the bike.

ok. after riding the course today, I stand corrected. my memory from last year was obviously affected by how bad last year was. The bike course is no worse than the collier lilly ride which you should be familiar with living in Davidson. About 2/3 through the course I looked at JK Bostic and said how much further to the really bad climb. His response was along the lines of I think we just did it. Obviously I was not in the necessary shape to do this race last year based upon today's ride and run.

Look forward to seeing you there in September.

Well if it's like the collier lilly ride (almost all of which I road yesterday) then I'll think I'll break out the disc since it's the only time I'll get to race it before florida. The only hills for Collier Lilly are the last two on Johnson Dairy & Grey road, or maybe those are the only ones I ever remember because I always end rides on them....
Seems like it should be a fun race!

jkbostic rode saturday with a disc. I vaguely remember people with discs last year. I think you will be fine. You might want to pm jeff (jkbostic) and get his opinion.

Hi guys!  I managed to get registered this morning, with only 12 slots left!

I had a blast with Dick, Debbie, and the rest of the gang riding the course last Saturday.  I'm sure the race will be just as much fun!  This will be my first 1/2, although I did the bike and run legs of White Lake in 05.

Dick, how did the run go Saturday afternoon?  Any surprises?  Tougher/easier than you remembered from last year?

the run went ok except for running out of gas the last mile or so. The first hill was not as bad as I remembered, but the hills up top were a little more than I remembered. Overall, I thought it went well. If you haven't run the course, I suggest doing it once just so you know what you're up against. If you do go, remember to go to the top of the hill. On the way up the hill you come to a stop sign, that is not the top, so stay to the left there and keep going up until you come to a T intersection.

Of course, if you have run the course, ignore everything I just said.

DB8 - 2006-08-28 2:22 PM Just around the corner.... feeling ready guys?!

I'm ready now, just not so sure about how I'll feel the day of the race. Some inconsiderate family member decided to get married the day before the race, asked me to be in the wedding AND then planned an evening wedding. The nerve of some people.

Somehow I have to sneak out of the reception early, drive up in time to crash and get a few hours of sleep before waking at 0:DARK:30 to race. I imagine that I'll just wait until the day of the race to decide my plan for the day:

A) Race

B) Participate

C) Endure

Geeze, the NERVE of some people! Haha. Well, have fun, just don't drink too much and you'll be okay. Remember, Duke is a TRAINING DAY (scary thought right) for you.... so no worries... you'll do just fine.

On that note, I vote for option (D) KICK @$$.

I'm not racing, but I'm volunteering and would love to have the chance to say "Hi" to you more accomplished BT triathletes! If you're staying for the awards ceremony, I'm supposed to be one of the people getting/keeping the awards organized.

I don't have the BT tattoos yet, but I'll have someone bodymark "BT" on my left calf.

So far everything looks great for Sunday ... I hope you all have GREAT races!
